Activate Discover’s 2nd Quarter 5% Categories

Discover’s 2nd quarter bonus categories are now available for registration. This upcoming quarter you can earn 5% Cashback Bonus at Gas Stations, Uber, Lyft and Wholesale Clubs. These categories should be somewhat easy to maximize!

Update: Home Depot has been added for June.  HT DoC

How It Works

The Discover it card earns 5% cashback on up to the first $1,500 in bonus category spend per quarter. If you are able to fully maximize the benefit then you can earn $75 cash back every 3 months. That’s a total of $300 every year.

Activate

You have to activate the bonus before making your purchases in order to get the 5% back. The 2nd quarter bonus categories can be activated now by visiting this page and logging into your account.

Key Terms

Here are the terms that explain which purchases will earn the 5% cashback in the 1st quarter:

  • Purchases made at Gas Stations include only merchants in the category that sell automotive gasoline that can be paid for either at the pump or inside the station. Gas Stations affiliated with supermarkets and supercenters may not be eligible.
  • Uber and Lyft purchases include only transactions made for Uber and Lyft Rides in the United States.
  • Purchases of affiliated Wholesale Club services, such as travel and cell phone purchases, may not be eligible in this category. Individual merchants and stand-alone stores within physical Wholesale club locations, or online, may not be eligible in this category.

Maximizing

Gas Stations and Wholesale Clubs should come in handy to help maximize this upcoming quarter’s 5% bonus. You can often find a good gift cards options at those locations. Uber and Lyft are also popular categories. But for Lyft, you can do even better with a Chase card.

4th Quarter Reminder

As a reminder Discover is paying 5% on Grocery Stores, Walgreens and CVS purchases in the 4th quarter (through March 31) which again, should be even easier to maximize for almost anyone.

Get the Card

If you don’t have the Discover it card currently, you can earn double cashback your first year. That means you earn 2% cashback on normal purchases and 10% cashback on bonus category purchases.

The card also has a $50 signup bonus.

Conclusion

Discover’s 2nd quarter bonus categories are not the best we have seen, but should still be somewhat be easy to maximize given the fact that Gas Stations and Wholesale Clubs are included. Just don’t forget to activate the 2nd Quarter bonus categories first, before you make any qualifying purchases, or you won’t earn the bonus cash. Do that now! There’s no reason not to.

  1. FYI you might want to correct the whole paragraph talking about grocery stores etc as being bonus categories in the “4th quarter.” Of course, Jan 1 to Mar 31 = the first quarter of 2020.
