Staples Offer Analysis

For those without a Chase Ink card this may be a nice way to utilize office supply stores for 5% back. I would look for some of the fairly common rebate deals on Visa & Mastercard gift cards to take advantage and maximize your profit. If you have a SimplyCash card with this offer, I imagine you would earn a total of 10% cashback since that card earns 5% at office supply stores.

Home Depot Offer

Amex Offers Staples Home Depot

Get 5% back as a statement credit by using your enrolled Card to make eligible purchases of $200+ in a single transaction in-store at The Home Depot by August 31, 2016, on up to $5,000 in total purchases. See below for terms.

Key Terms

  • Enrollment is limited.
  • An “eligible purchase” means a purchase of $200 or more made in a single transaction by 8/31/16, on up to $5,000 in total purchases, excluding HD Direct, Home Decorators Collection, Home Depot Foundation, Home Depot Fuel, Home Depot Car Wash, Home Depot at-home services, Home Depot Carpet Clean, Your Other Warehouse, Red Beacon brand, and third party installation services purchased in home.
  • Offer valid for in-store purchases only.
  • Valid at any participating location in the US and US Territories.
  • Offer is limited to a total of $250 in statement credits per American Express® online account.

Home Depot Offer Analysis

Home Depot does sell Visa/MC pin-enabled gift cards along with a variety of other merchant cards. This 5% discount won’t be enough to make too much of a profit, but combined with the right promotion it may work for some. Always remember that purchasing discounted Home Depot gift cards may be a better way to go for large purchases.

Offer Availability

Update: Some people report not receiving all of the offers on business cards and others report getting a similar offer for 5% off purchases of $100+ at Staples on personal cards. It is probably a good idea to check all of your cards.

I was able to find these offers on the American Express website for all of my business cards, but not personal cards. As of now I don’t believe there is a way to load these offers via Twitter or other social media. My guess is that all business cards have the offer while personal cards do not. If you have found these offers on a personal card then please let me know.

Total Wine Offer

Amex Offers Staples Home Depot

For the record, there is a 3rd almost identical offer giving 5% back for purchases at Total Wine. It isn’t nearly as interesting to me, but it may be a good offer for some.

While on the surface 5% isn’t groundbreaking, many people don’t have a Chase Ink card or have maxed out their bonus on that card, so this discount may be welcome for some, especially if Staples runs rebate promotions or instant discounts on gift cards.

  1. I’m really enjoying the theme/design of your weblog. Do you ever run into any internet browser compatibility issues?
A handful of my blog audience have complained about
my site not working correctly in Explorer but looks great in Firefox.
Do you have any advice to help fix this problem?

  2. I got the Home Depot on my OBC (incl. AUs too). My anniversary date is coming up so this is a decent way to hit my $6500 threshhold. $100 visa gift cards will take a decent chunk out of my 2 remaining bluebirds capacity though.

  3. Why does your site continuously send these every fing time I post? Very annoying

You recently followed one of my posts. This means you will receive an email when new comments are posted.

To activate, click confirm below. If you believe this is an error, ignore this message and we’ll never bother you again.

    • Ummm…. Because you didn’t uncheck the box that says, “Notify me of follow up comments by email”. In the business, we call that ” Operator Error”.

        • That’s because you have to (or not) subscribe to comments on each new post by clicking the subscribe button in that email.

    • As the other commenter said, you need to uncheck the box. This is a standard WordPress function and is implemented on a variety of sites. It gives you the option to see every response or to simply leave a comment and not have to worry about it.

  4. Just to offer the other side, if I were looking to make a major purchase, I wouldn’t do it on gift cards. I’d rather do it on an AMEX for extended warranty, return protection, etc. I buy plenty of GCs, but there are definitely situations where this deal would be preferable.

    • Yeah the extended warranty is an extremely good point. I’ve had to weigh the pros and cons in the past in relevant circumstances. When we purchased a new $1,200 washer/dryer combo I considered the savings of using gift cards versus the cc cb+warranty protection. In the end we went with the instant $216 discount (20% gc minus 2% everyday cc cb) in lieu of an additional 1 year warranty. Sure, it’s a gamble and definitely YMMV. But we still had 1 year manufacturer warranty and unlike something like medical expenses, for us this was replaceable without breaking the bank or budget (emergency funds type of item).

      • I’ve never looked but do most of the CC companies terms state that the whole purchase has to be on the card? Could you have the cashier split the transaction and put say $20 on the CC and the rest on GCs and still get the warranty benefit?

        • Mike, from my experience, yes you can split the payment between CC and GC, but the warranty will only reimburse you up to the amount you’ve spent on the CC.

  5. As you pointed out, it’s really only worthwhile for those who don’t have cards that earn 5% at Staples or Home Depot. Even then, it’s still lukewarm at best. It’s a moot point for me as I don’t have the offers but to be honest I probably wouldn’t have added them as I know it’s a limited quantity and since I have no use for it then I may as well let others grab a slice before the pizza is gone.

The Staples offer excludes e-gift cards too, something to note. As far as Home Depot is concerned, buying from with any INK card will net you 5% in UR points which for many is worth more than 5%. They’re selling HD on ebay from SVM which opens up many options for those who dip in ebay/gc purchases. In Q3 (July-Sept) Discover will include 5% for home improvement which, if played right, could turn into 10% cash back for anyone enrolled in the double cash back promo. If you’re looking to make a quick HD purchase you can, as Shawn noted, buy gc from any of the exchanges at a discount. In this instance it’s not risky as you’d be within their protection policy and wouldn’t risk fraudulent abuse. This option works well when meeting minimum spend requirements on any random cc too. Suffice to say, there’s a ton of options to get 5%+

  6. Home Depot has 10% off coupons, you can also use Lowe’s bought on EBay, and you can copy the same Lowe’s coupon as many times as you like..

Cost $3.95 deliver via email, plus 5%, I will take 15% off any day, but HD Gift cards bought with Chase INK has been a great game for me…5X plus 10% off,

  7. Couple that 5% with a military discount of another 10% and you have an opportunity to re-sell some merch on Amazon or Fleabay. Dang Im smart

  8. I’m a business platinum & spg business holder. I got neither offer on either card nor on my personal cards. I’ve never gotten any of the Staples/Home Depot/Target offers. Strange.

  9. Just as a data point I did not get this on my business Delta Reserve but did get it on my personal Hilton card. For my wife she got it on her personal reserve and personal Hilton card.

  10. I got none of the offers on any of my business cards or my AU business cards. I got a Home Depot 5% off $100 on all of my personal and AU personal cards. But that’s it. Will keep checking back to see if any more show up but I’ll probably just go buy a couple hundred bucks worth of discounted gas gift cards for personal use from Home Depot if this is all I get.

This offer is OK but nothing compared to last summers business card offer for 5x $75 off $250 at Home Depot. I profited over $2k (plus points) from reselling Shell gas gift cards from that one.
