Ways to Earn 5X Chase Ink
The Chase Ink Cash & Plus cards are among my favorite cards period. Not only do they earn very valuable Ultimate Rewards points, but they have a very generous 5X category bonus. Thankfully there are many ways to hit this 5X bonus and generate thousands of points on everyday spend. Today I’ll go through the best and easiest ways to earn 5X Ultimate Rewards with your Chase Ink Cash or Ink Plus card.
Overview
The Chase Ink Cash & Ink Plus cards earn 5X points in the following categories:
- Office supply stores
- Cellular phone, landline, internet and cable TV services.
The Ink Cash is capped at earning 5X on $25K in spend per cardmember year while the Ink Plus is capped at $50K in spend. Now let’s look at 7 great ways to max out your 5X earnings with these cards.
1. Pay Your Television & Cell Phone Bill
The first and perhaps most obvious way to rack up 5X with these cards is to pay your normal bills. Most households spend $200+ per month between cable television, internet and cell phones. Thankfully you can easily earn 5X on that spend. At $200 per month, you can generate 12,000 points per year without doing anything differently. Pretty good.
2. Take Advantage of Staples Gift Card Sales
Staples loves to run sales on gift cards. Every few weeks they tend to run a negative cost Easy Rebate promotion on Visa or Mastercard gift cards. These promotions have a limit of 1 per household, but participating in them can be a way to generate points at a negative cost. If you do purchase $400 in Visa or Mastercards and participate just 10 times a year, you will generate almost 21,000 points!
Visa/MC deals aren’t the only way to earn big points at Staples. They often run discounts on merchant gift cards as well. These cards can sometimes be sold at a profit and you get to keep the points. In the past month Staples has had profitable deals on Gap, iTunes, Nike & more. Of course you can always buy gift cards for personal use. A lot of people purchase Amazon gift cards at Staples to earn 5X on all of their Amazon spend.
3 Maximize Office Depot/Officemax Instant Rebates
Office Depot and Officemax also have Visa rebate promotions of their own. Unlike Staples, they give you the rebate instantly! While the terms are enforced differently at every store, it is often possible to get these deals over and over. For example, this week they are running a Visa gift card rebate. If you purchase $400 in cards, you make $1.10 and earn 2,070 points. Do it every day or at multiple stores and you can earn big!
4. Buy From PayPal Digital Gifts on eBay (NO LONGER WORKS)
PayPal Digital Gifts sells a variety of eGift cards on eBay. They also run discount promotions from time to time on cards. While PayPal Digital Gifts isn’t technically a utility or an office supply store, if you pay with a Chase Ink Plus/Cash through PayPal you earn 5X Ultimate Rewards points. Some of their deals are great to purchase for personal use and others are great resale opportunities! Here is an example of some recent deals.
5. Save with Gift Card Mart
Gift Card Mart is a smaller gift card reseller, but one with a great reputation. They sell merchant gift cards at a discount off of face value and you also earn 5X Ultimate Rewards points when you pay with a Chase Ink Cash/Plus card through PayPal. I have purchased from Gift Card Mart many times and find their staff to be among the friendliest in the industry.
6. Purchase Gift Cards from Gyft
Gyft makes it really easy to earn 5X Ultimate Rewards points. They don’t sell discounted cards, but if you are looking for a card at face value then this is a great place to get them. Not only do you earn 5X when paying with a Chase Ink Plus/Cash card through PayPal, but your electronic card is delivered instantly. I purchase $500 Amazon gift cards through Gyft and load them to my account to earn 5X! It’s easy, takes only seconds and is all done online.
7. Get Discounted Cards from CardCash (NO LONGER WORKS)
CardCash is another gift card reseller that codes as 5X with a Chase Ink Plus/Cash card through PayPal. For awhile CardCash was no longer coding as 5X, however purchases from them are once again earning the bonus. CardCash only guarantees their cards for 45 days and they tend to have a lot more fraudulent cards compared to other resellers like Gift Card Mart in my experience. With that said, if you can get a good discount, earn 5X and have an immediate use for the cards this could be a good option.
Putting It All Together
Between paying your normal bills and purchasing gift cards for both personal use and to resell, you can easily max out your 5X bonus categories on the Chase Ink Cash or Ink Plus cards. If there is a store you shop at regularly, then it pays to see if you can both earn 5X and save off of face value.

It was working as of about a week ago. Just did another purchase yesterday so I could check in a day or two when it posts.
I tried it again and that time it worked for 5 times as long as it is through PayPal. Must have been a quirk.
I had tried it again a couple days later and it did work that time. Not sure if it was a one day thing…
Shawn,

Is this Chase Ink Plus still available? The Ink Preferred that’s out now doesn’t have the same 5x bonuses right? So all this is only for people that have the discontinued Ink Plus? Any other way to maximize these 5x on other cards?
The Ink Plus is not available to new customers, but the Ink Cash is still available and you can use these strategies for that card as well.
Where can I buy VGC online for 5x?
$300 Visas at Staples.com.
Whole Foods gift cards at Staples.com or in store for my personal use and gifts and of course the usual way of cell, landline, internet, cable.
Shawn pointed out GiftCard mart and I see they have Whole Foods for 5% off plus your 5X ink……
Personally I snag some Whole Foods cards on Amex Offers like the recent $20 off $100 Staples online.
Thx Jedi, I will check out GiftCard Mart for more WF cards
I’ll be using the GYFT route after March 1st rolls around for grocery and Amazon once my beloved SallieMae CC becomes useless.
