I recently went on a field trip with my daughter’s preschool class to Legoland Discovery Center Michigan and wanted to do a quick review.  Since the first visit I have purchased an annual pass since it gives us a place to go where they can play while I can do work during the summer.  All together there are 12 distinct areas or rooms in the Legoland Discovery Center.  It packs a decent sized punch for the small footprint it is working with.

Location

The Legoland Discover Center Michigan is located in Great Lakes Crossing Outlet Mall in Auburn Hills.  This is 30-45 minutes north of downtown Detroit.  The mall itself has a lot to offer.  There is a large play area in the food court, a SEA LIFE Aquarium which you can buy combo passes to along with Legoland Discover Center, and a newer Peppa the Pig attraction. There is also a new TopGolf behind the mall too.  You could make a day of it if you wanted to!

Ticket Prices

The regular ticket price for Legoland Discover Center is $24.95 online or $29.95 at the door.  If you wanted to combine it with the SEA LIFE Aquarium the cost is $34.95, only $10 more.  We purchased the annual passes for $45 a person because after two visits it pays for itself.

Legoland Discover Center Michigan Review – Areas

I thought the easiest thing to do would be to give you a quick run down of each area or room in the Legoland Discover Center:

Kingdom Quest

This is the first thing you see upon entering.  They have one of the video game rides that have become so popular.  You shoot your gun to defeat the enemies and save the princess!  It takes around 5 minutes and it is a fun little game.  The line is almost non existent so you can ride it as much as you want.  They also take a picture on the ride you can purchase for $16, which is extreme.

Miniland

Upon exiting Kingdom Quest you enter Miniland which has Detroit area’s most notable attractions built out of Legos.  It is pretty impressive and the room goes from day to night every few minutes.  Be sure to see it “at night” when the lights come on in the buildings.  There are a few interactive things for the kids too.

Merlin’s Apprentice Ride

When you leave Miniland you enter the main area where everything else resides.  Your first stop should be Merlin’s Apprentice Ride.  I hope you wore your peddling shoes because the faster you peddle the higher you go.  My kids love the ride, especially my son who is tall enough to ride it alone.

Duplo Farm

If you like the big blocks you will enjoy Duplo Farm where you can build walls or whatever you want with the bigger Duplo Legos.  There is also a mini house to climb and a slide to ride down.

Lego Friends

This is the area where my daughter spends most of her time.  The girl themed area has building areas with tons of bricks.  They also have life size Lego Friends characters built out of Lego bricks of course.

Lego Racers

This is my favorite area.  See who is the best builder and put your creation to the test on the Lego Racers ramps.

There is also a Lego Racer virtual reality game next door but I have not had the chance to check it out yet. It comes with an extra cost of $6.

Underwater Quest

Lego instructions on a tablet – sounds like a plan to me!  This area has different designs and they will give you step by step instructions on how to complete them.

Lego 4D Cinema

What it sounds like – a 4D theater with Lego movies.  We have seen three of them already and they last about 10 minutes each.  They run on a regular schedule and it includes wind, water, and foam!  If you have ever been to a 4D theater then you know the drill. They rotate three every day and they seem to be updated somewhat regularly.

Lego City Play Zone

A pretty big and fairly decent indoor play area.  If you forget socks buy them for $1 at the cafe!

Lego Movie Area

Create a Lego Movie of your own.  Take pictures of your creation as you build with a tablet to turn it into movie of your own.

Cafe

The cafe area has plenty of seating and not terrible prices.  The pizza isn’t the best but that is expected.  You are better off hitting the food court right outside of Legoland before or after your visit.

Creative Workshop

This is the only area I haven’t been in.  They run classes on a regular schedule with a master builder that shows you how to make awesome things with Lego bricks.

Lego Store

You exit through the Lego store which has your normal stuff.  You could probably get it cheaper at Target etc. but some things are unique to these stores.

Final Thoughts

My kids thoroughly love the Legoland Discover Center Michigan but they seem to be about the perfect age for it.  Anything over 9 or 10 might be too old unless they just really love Legos.  They are usually entertained for a good 2-3 hours each visit and since it is pretty well contained I can hang out in the cafe area and get some work done while they play.  The best part is I don’t have to pick up Lego bricks when they are done!
