Maximizing JCPenney & Macy's Amex Offers

Maximizing JCPenney & Macy’s Amex Offers

It is Amex Offers expiration week and in an effort to encourage you to take advantage, I am highlighting how I am maximizing some of the better offers. As a reminder I already covered:

This morning I am going to cover JCPenney and Macy’s, while later on in the day I’ll look at Office Depot and Officemax.

JCPenney Amex Offer

The JCPenney Amex Offer gives $10 off purchases of $50+. eGift cards purchased online don’t trigger the offer since they are sold by Cashstar. Physical cards should work, but I actually prefer to go into a store for this one.

First off, JCPenney stores carry a few third party gift cards including iTunes and some restaurant cards. Second, when buying JCPenney gift cards you can buy one $50 card and then keep loading $50 more to the card per swipe until you reach the max of $500. This eliminates the problem of having multiple low value cards.

My Strategy

I mostly purchased JCPenney gift cards to lock in a 20% discount on future purchases. For many of you that won’t be ideal, so you can either look for profitable 3rd party sales opportunities or re-sell the JCPenney cards at a small profit depending on your bulk relationships. Since this is only a $10 off $50 offer, it may not be worth a huge time investment. Next holiday season look for their promotion giving a $25 off $25 coupon for purchasing $100 in gift cards! That sweetens the deal tremendously.

Macy’s Amex Offer

Amex and Macy’s wanted to play a trick with their targeted Amex Offer. While almost all of the other good offers expire on 12/31, this one expires today! As a reminder, you get $15 back with a purchase of $100+. So what should you buy?

Similar to the JCPenney offer, I plan to purchase Macy’s gift cards to lock in a discount for the future. I wouldn’t go overboard with this, but I don’t have to since I was only targeted on a handful of cards. Fortunately I was able to confirm that purchasing a $100 eGift card triggers the credit, but I did not earn any portal rewards.

Since I haven’t been to a physical Macy’s (too many other things to do) I can’t confirm what types of third party gift cards they have. (If any.) If you have seen other gift cards at your local Macy’s, make sure to let us know.

Conclusion

Neither of these is a blockbuster offer, but both have some opportunity for the right people. I’m happy to lock-in these discounts for future purchases, especially at Macy’s where everything can be done online.

  1. For JCP, I bought thr $100 gift card that comes with a $10 Off $10 coupon inside. Then do two $50 split payments using two different Amex cards with the JCP offer. When you spend the gift card, make sure you use more JCP COUPONS like $10 Off $25 to double dip your savings.
