Maximizing Office Depot Amex Offer

Tomorrow marks the expiration of a ton of Amex Offers. In an effort to help you maximize I am going through the best ones and explaining how to get the best value. As a reminder I wrote separate posts about maximizing the following offers:

Office Depot Amex Offer

Hopefully at this point you have already redeemed all of your Office Depot/Officemax Amex Offers. They ran a negative cost Visa gift card deal before Christmas that would have given you the best return, but I know life isn’t quite perfect. In fact, due to me being busy and my closest Office Depot being a pain, I didn’t redeem all of mine. Thankfully there is still a lot of potential.

As a reminder, this targeted offer was available on certain business cards. Here are the details:

Get a one-time $20 statement credit by using your enrolled Card to spend a minimum of $100+ in one or more transactions in-store at Office Depot OfficeMax or online at by 12/31/2016.

How to Maximize

Office Depot and Officemax sell a variety of Visa gift cards with various fees. The regular $200 cards have a $6.95 fee, but there are other cards such as the Dining Everywhere Visas which have lower fees. (Note: The “Everywhere” cards only work at certain merchants. Make sure you know that you can liquidate them before buying.) I’ll base my math on the higher fee normal cards just to be safe.

A Strategy

The best strategy is to purchase a $200 card with a payment split between two cards with the offer. In other words, charge $100 to the first card and the rest to the second card. You will pay a $6.95 fee (or potentially less) for a $200 card, however you will trigger two offers and profit $33.05! If you only have a single card, you would profit $13.05.

5 Back Cards

You may also be able to find 5 Back Visa cards which give 5% back on purchases at select merchants. You may be able to buy those cards and make a profit as shown above and then use them to buy gift cards or merchandise at merchants that earn 5% back. Consider this an advanced method, but one that is working for some people.

Visa gift cards sold by Office Depot and Officemax are issued by Metabank and the PIN is the last four digits of the card number. For more info on liquidating, see: How To Liquidate Prepaid Visa & Mastercard Gift Cards

A $33 profit per two cards is worth making a trip to Office Depot in my opinion. The cards are fairly easy to liquidate and you will earn rewards on the spend plus put cash in your pocket and that is always a good thing!

  1. I prefer the Clothing Everywhere card, since POS of our favorite discount store also acknowledge that they sell clothes… 5 back card is way better though
