Office Depot Visa Gift Card Rebate

Office Depot Visa Gift Card Rebate

Office Depot and Officemax have a new Visa gift card deal starting Sunday, March 11th. Let’s take a look at the details.

The Offer

  • Save $10 instantly when you buy $300 of Visa® gift cards.  Found on Page 15 of the weekly add.

Key Terms

  • Limit one (1) offer per customer.
  • Discount applied at register.
  • Offer valid 3/11/18 through 3/17/18.
  • Offer valid in store on Visa® Gift Cards only.
  • Visa Gift Card is issued by Metabank.

While the limit of 1 is probably hard-coded into the register, some stores will allow you to do multiple transactions. This varies from store to store and even sometimes from cashier to cashier!

The Math

You can purchase $200 Visa gift cards with a $6.95 fee.

Generally the best option is to purchase 2 of the $200 Visa gift cards. When doing so, the math works out like this:

  • Cost of cards: $413.90
  • Minus instant rebate: -$10
  • Final cost: $403.90
  • Loss: $3.90

It is best to pay with a card that earns 5X at office supply stores such as a Chase Ink Cash/Plus. For example, a Chase Ink card would earn 2070 Ultimate Rewards pointsAlternatively, an American Express SimplyCash Plus which earns 5% cashback at office supply stores would earn you $20.70 cashback.

You can get another $4 through their rewards program which gives you 2% back, but it’s capped at $200 per quarter.

Visa gift cards sold by Officemax/Office Depot are issued by Metabank and are pin-enabled. Thankfully they are generally easier to liquidate than Mastercard gift cards. These cards should work fine to load Bluebird/Serve at Walmart and work many other places. For more detailed information on liquidating these cards, see: How To Liquidate Prepaid Visa & Mastercard Gift Cards

This is not the best deal since the instant discount is only $10, but it could still be useful to get some super cheap Ultimate Rewards points, especially now that some major online gift card opportunities have dried up. Hopefully you’re able to get the instant discount multiple times at your location.

Happy 5Xing!

  1. Considering the fact that Staples doesn’t look like they are doing rebates anymore, there is a good chance you will not see discounted Visas at Staples any time soon. so it might be worth it to go for this discount.

Unfortunately, too many of these Office Depot stores are run by morons who allow people to do multiple transactions (even though it is limited to 1 per customer in the details). While this is great for the first person arriving at the store and buys them all up, it is not great for anyone else who wants to buy it. It also defeats the whole purpose of the sale, which is to get customers into the store. Now, people come into the store and the only thing that happens is they get pissed when they see none of the visa cards left.

Which is why many people do what I do which is hide gift cards in the store in advance since that seems to be the only way to purchase them. Or some people even walk out of the store with them and then bring them back to purchase when they go on sale. (Is it stealing if the thing you are stealing has no value, since the gift card has no value until activated?)

The point is, it is just stupid of Office Depot not to enforce their limits. Somehow, when staples had the Visas with rebates, there were always plenty left in the store, since the rebate was limited to 1 per household. Yes, you could send the rebate to 2 or 3 houses, but at least that limited to 2 or 3 at the most.
