OfficeMax Gift Card Deal – Potential For Free Money

This week (through March 8th) there is another amazing OfficeMax gift card deal. When your purchase $250 or more in Visa gift cards, they will give you $15 off instantly. Each customer is eligible for two offers, meaning it is best to get $500 or more in gift cards. There are two feasible options.

Gift Card Purchase Options

Option 1: Buy two $200 Visa cards and one $100 card

Cost: $206.95 + $206.95 + $105.95 – $30 = $489.85

Profit: $10.15

Option 2: Buy three $200 Visa cards

Cost: $206.95 + $206.95 + $206.95 – $30 = $590.85

Profit: $9.15

Suggestions

Since you are making money, this is a great deal no matter which credit card you use.  You can use it to meet the minimum spend on a card or to simply earn a few bucks along with the points or miles from your rewards credit card.  Once you have purchased the gift cards, you can then use them for everyday spending or load them to your Bluebird card at Walmart.

If you have a Chase Ink card, then this is a fantastic deal since that card earns 5x Ultimate Rewards points at office supply stores including OfficeMax.  For a normal card I would probably suggest going with option 1, but if you have the Ink card, then option 2 would be a better way to go in order to earn more points.

Please also keep in mind that the OfficeMax stores only keep a limited stock of Visa cards.  During past similar promotions, they have sold out of the $200 gift cards pretty quickly.  I highly suggest getting over there as soon as possible because this deal may not last until the end of the week as stock will diminish.

Issues

This deal began yesterday and there were widespread reports that the coupon used to take off the discount wasn’t working.  I am fully expecting that the issue will be fixed today, but if you run into this problem, simply ask the cashier to get the manager to help.  Yesterday I was able to get a manager to manually discount the $30 at a couple of different stores.

Conclusion

Whenever you can buy gift cards that can be used to pay everyday bills at below face value, then it is a fantastic deal.  For me, the best option is to buy gift cards with the Chase Ink card and then load them onto a Bluebird to pay bills.  If you don’t have a Chase Ink card, then this is still a fantastic deal since you will be making money either way.

Hopefully today corporate will fix the coupon issue and the process will be a little easier.  Even with the minor inconvenience of having to get a manager to do a manual discount, this is still worth heading over to OfficeMax for.
