Introduction
Safeway has an online coupon offering a $10 instant rebate with the purchase of at least $100 in American Express gift cards. My local Safeway brand is Vons and I have confirmed that the offer is available at my stores. To get the offer you must load the coupon online to your “just for u” account. It expires June 10, 2014.
To Load The Coupon
- Go to Safeway.com (Or your local brand’s website) and click the “just for u” button on the top left.
- Log in and find the “Coupon Center” link and click “View Coupons”.
- You are now on the screen with all of your available coupons. If the American Express offer isn’t showing, then click the “Special Offers” category on the left.
- You will now see the offer available. Click the “Add” button and it will be loaded to your account. Once loaded the “Add” button will turn grey and say “Added” as shown below.
Fees for American Express gift cards run $5.95. (The price is the same for both fixed $100 cards and variable cards up to $500). You can simply purchase a $100 card and get the instant rebate or purchase a variable gift card and load up to $500 on it if you are trying to spend more. If you have a credit card that gets 5% back at grocery stores, then this deal is even sweeter.
Keep in mind that American Express gift cards don’t have pins and cannot be loaded to a Bluebird card. You can spend them via Amazon Payments, use them to pay your normal expenses or purchase Visa/Mastercard gift cards with them and then load those to Bluebird.

Conclusion
This deal isn’t going to make you rich, but if you have a Safeway nearby or have a card which earns a category bonus, then this is a nice little deal. Keep in mind that some people have been reporting that you can use the coupon more than once, but the coupon does say there is a limit of “1”. (Update: I can confirm that this only works once per account.) Happy hunting!
