Staples Amex Gift Card Rebate Deal

Staples has a negative cost Amex gift card deal this week. This is not one of their beast rebate promotions on gift cards, but it is still a good deal. Let’s take a look!

The Deal

  • Get a $20 Staples Gift Card via easy rebate when you buy $300 in American Express Gift Cards.

Key Terms

  • Deal valid from 12/3/17 through 12/9/17
  • In-store only.
  • Limit 1 rebate per name/address/household.

The deal can be found on the upcoming week’s ad on the Staples website.

Maximizing the Deal

This deal is usually best maximized by using a card that earns 5X at office supply stores like the Chase Ink Plus or Chase Ink Cash. You can also use an Amex SimplyCash Plus which earns 5% cashback at office supply stores.

Using the Chase Ink, the optimal strategy is to purchase 2 of the $200 cards which cost $206.95 each. Here is the math assuming a $20 Staples gift card is worth $20:

  • Cost: $413.90
  • Minus Rebate: $20
  • Final Cost: -$6.10
  • UR Points Earned: 2,070

You could also purchase a $200 card and a $100 card, but the savings of $1 on fees doesn’t justify the loss of 500 Ultimate Rewards points on the extra $100 in spend.

These deals are nice if you have a Staples nearby. Usually stock tends to run out quickly when these types of deals come around, but not as much on these Amex gift card deals. I mentioned above the this is not the best gift card deal from Staples and that’s because Amex Gift Cards are not easy to unload and the rebate is in the form of a Staples Gift Card. That rebate can either be used at Staples, or sold for about $17.

Based in NYC. Points/miles enthusiast for years and actively writing about it for the last two years at Danny the Deal Guru. I'm always looking out for deals. Making a few bucks is always nice, but the traveling is by far the best part of this business.

  1. Hello,

    Yeah, similar issues.

Got a $100 and $200 GC. Rebate Form that was printed states only $100 GC. Does not reflect $200 GC purchase.

Have applied for rebate online. Let’s see what happens in 72 hours.

  2. Submitted rebate at SER like I always do. Just got notice that “Staples could not process your rebate” because “all required products were not submitted” which is untrue. Online chat with Staples rep and he stated that they are having problems with this rebate and I should check back in 72 hours. This is the same BS that they did a couple of weeks ago with a rebate on Visa GCs. Hard to justify the amount of time spent here.

    • Regular spend (5x UR Everywhere) or use it to buy a VGC. I think they may work with Plastiq too. Load it to your PayPal account.

  3. Amex gift cards are awful, because they have no way to go online and register them with your name/address to be able to be used for online purchases. The print on the card says it can be used online and doesn’t need to be registered, but I found that not to be true as almost every online merchant I tried to use it at rejected it. I then called the number on the card and they said they registered it with my name/address but I still had difficulty using it online. Point being, if you buy these you are probably only going to be able to use them in store and not online.

    • Did you try loading it to PayPal and checking out with PayPal using the Amex GC? Shouldn’t be a problem then.

  4. No they Amex gift cards don’t have a pin so they’ll run as credit rather than debit, which is what is required for Walmart money orders. Otherwise you could just buy money orders with your credit card and skip the whole gift card process, which would be great. Your best bet is turning the Amex card into a pin gift card, just loading it into your amazon account, or spending them like cash.
