Staples Mastercard Gift Card Deal

Staples Mastercard Gift Card Deal

Staples sells a variety of Visa & Mastercard gift cards. Depending on the value (up to $200) the fee to purchase these can cost as much as $6.95. They do often run rebate promos on these cards, however the rebates are limited to one per household meaning it gets hard to scale up. Well, this week they are trying something different. Let’s take a look.

There are reports that these are not being limited to one per person in store so sooner may be better.  The rumor is that Staples is purging their gift cards and will not longer be carrying these in the future.  This is 100% speculation at this point.

Remember to be cautious when ramping up with Chase.  Huge spikes in spending (if not your norm) can lead to possible shut downs.

The Offer

  • No purchase fee when you buy a $200 Mastercard® Gift Card

Key Terms

  • Valid 4/22/18–4/28/18.
  • The Mastercard® Gift Card is issued by U.S. Bank National Association, pursuant to a license from Mastercard International.
  • Limit 1 per customer.

You can find the full terms in the weekly ad on page 2.

Maximizing This Deal

Since there seems to be a limit of 1 discounted purchase fee per transaction (who knows if that will be enforced), it is probably best to purchase $200 cards in order to achieve the most spend. Cards like the Chase Ink Plus, Ink Cash and Amex SimplyCash Plus will all earn 5X/5% back on these purchases. I also assume you may be able to visit multiple stores and/or ask to do multiple transactions despite the terms, but that is obviously YMMV.

Spending the Mastercards

These Mastercards are PIN-enabled and should work anywhere Mastercard is accepted. I know people have had issues with these coding as debit cards at Walmart, but they do work at some places and can be run as credit if you are just using them to buy normal products.

Also be aware that Matercards have had issues with fraud in the past so don’t hold onto these long.

Given that Office Depot just ended their generous Visa gift card rebate I’m sure some of your Ink cards have fatigue, but get them ready to go again with this deal. It’s nice to see Staples move away from the restricted rebate program to a discount that is seemingly more scalable. Even if it is with Mastercards. 🙁

  1. The Staples in Plantation FL is one of few I’ve visited in the past year (also one in Naples / Ft Myers area). All of my other visits for Ink purchases have been OD/OM….which as of a week ago were still ok for Ink. It appears this was an individual store decision as I haven’t seen widespread reports of problems at other Staples on Flyertalk.

  2. about that 100% pure speculation, I’d say in spades…. All week long, at both my staples in Hoo’ville, they’ve had boatloads of available MC & Visa…. If they rumor’s logic had any basic in fact, the m/c’s would be now very hard to find. Anything but. No?

PS, who or where exactly were you citing for this rumor? Provenance?

    • Saw some chatter on it – thought it best to put it out there just in case. Did the not limited tip work out for you? Came from the same source….

      • Hi Mark. Yes, thanks for passing along “rumors” — I do appreciate that sometimes reasoned speculation indeed can alert us to founded developments — of possibilities in the offing. About the “limited” issue, as I’m fortunate to have two Staples locations nearby, I chose to just play it cool all week, to keep it to one purchase per visit. (same with family members who have their own Ink’s) Was more worried about not setting off alarms with Chase/Ink — with multiple purchases. By week’s end, both Staples locations still had lots and lots of $200 MC’s still available. (over fifty just that I could see on display)

(ps, fyi, in my area anyway, no issues using mcs to buy mos via KR)

        • Sounds like a good plan – if you can easily get back to them then no need to burn bridges :).

Hopefully we see a similar VGC deal soon.

  3. Data point 4/28. Staples Plantation FL no longer accepting credit cards for Visa/MC gift cards. Spoke nicely to manager…said change implemented about 2 weeks ago . This store was ok for Ink for several yrs.
