Staples is a popular store for miles and points enthusiasts who are always looking to increase their credit card spending. The reason for that is that Staples sells gift cards, and there are a couple of credit cards that earn 5X points on these purchases.
When it comes to Mastercard and Visa gift cards, Staples stores normally carry denominations up to $200. But now some stores have variable load Visa gift cards which go as high as $500, as reported by GC Galore. They come with a $5.95 activation fee, which is actually less that the fee charged for the $200 gift cards.
If you have a Chase Ink Cash or Ink Plus card, you would earn 2,530 Ultimate Rewards for each $500 Visa gift card you buy, while paying the $5.95 fee.
Buying $500 gift cards might be preferrable since you are dealing with less cards, and it might be cheaper when it comes to liquidating these funds. On the other hand, it is possible to purchase $200 gift cards from Staples with no fee during their frequent promotions.
