Staples Visa Gift Card

Staples Visa Gift Card Rebate Deal

Staples once again has a negative cost Visa gift card deal this week. The $20 rebate hadn’t been around in a while and you can generate 5X points as well. Let’s take a look!

The Deal

  • Get a $20 Visa prepaid card by mail with your Visa gift card purchase of $300 or more.

Key Terms

  • Deal valid from 03-12-2017 through 03-18-2017
  • In-store only.
  • Limit 1 rebate per name/address/household.

The deal can be found on the upcoming week’s ad on the Staples website.

Maximizing the Deal

staples visa rebate

This deal is best maximized by using a card that earns 5X at office supply stores like the Chase Ink Plus or Chase Ink Cash. You can also use an Amex SimplyCash Plus which earns 5% cashback at office supply stores.

Using the Chase Ink, the optimal strategy is to purchase 2 of the $200 cards which cost $206.95 each. Here is the math:

  • Cost: $413.90
  • Minus Rebate: $20
  • Final Cost: -$6.10
  • UR Points Earned: 2,070

You could also purchase a $200 card and a $100 card, but the savings of $1 on fees doesn’t justify the loss of 500 Ultimate Rewards points on the extra $100 in spend.

Liquidate the Visa Rebate Card

The rebate will come in the form of a Visa gift card that IS pin-enabled. As I covered before, I have successfully loaded a Staples rebate card to a Bluebird/Serve type card at Walmart. The PIN number is the last four digits of the card number. Note that lately a few readers have had issues trying to use this card’s PIN, so YMMV. Worst case you can utilize my previous liquidation strategy or simply use it for normal spend.

These deals are nice if you have a Staples nearby, but stock tends to run out quickly, so I wouldn’t go far out of my way to get the cards. While this deal won’t make your Ultimate Rewards balance swell too much, it is a way to pickup a chunk of points and a few dollars too.

  1. Meh…not worth the effort of going to staples, buying the cards, liquidating them then waiting for the $20 card and liquidating that plus losing out on any possible rewards

  2. Just curious. What do you plan to liquidate these $200 VGCs? WM stops split tender last month and it’s a big pain to liquidate $200 VGC one by one with separate transactions or separate visits.

  3. Also remember that the Amazon Prime Visa Signature card from Chase pays 2% cashback at office supply stores. On two $200 cards, you net a profit of $6.10, plus 800 points at a value of $8.00.

  4. Is the 5X points per dollar spend at office supply stores going away or phasing out for the Chase Business Ink?

  5. do you have to fill out a form online to get the rebate? I’ve usually steered clear of these b/c of the hassle factor and I can’t get the Chase Ink for the 5x points but might get one this time around as I am working on soem minimum spends. Thanks!
