Staples Visa Gift Card Deal

Staples sells a variety of Visa & Mastercard gift cards. Depending on the value (up to $200) the fee to purchase these can cost as much as $6.95.

This deal started yesterday on 8/16/20

The Offer

  • $5 off the fee when you buy a $200 Visa® Gift Card

Key Terms

  • Valid 8/16/20–8/22/20.
    • The Visa Gift Card is issued by MetaBank
    • Limit 5 per customer.

You can find the full terms in the upcoming ad on page 8.

Maximizing This Deal

There’s a limit of 5 per customers. Cards like the Chase Ink PlusInk Cash and Amex SimplyCash Plus will all earn 5X/5% back on these purchases. I also assume you may be able to visit multiple stores and/or ask to do multiple transactions despite the terms, but that is obviously YMMV.

Liquidating Visa Gift Card

The Visa gift card is pin-enabled. The PIN number is usually the last four digits of the card number. You can utilize my previous liquidation strategy or simply use it for normal spend.

It’s nice to see Staples bring back this offer, as many 5X sources have been drying up lately. Most people probably prefer Visa gift cards, so this is your opportunity to fill up your Ultimate Rewards accounts. This isn’t as good as the fee free sales but paying $1.95 for 1,000 Ultimate Rewards points (worth $15) is still a good deal.  It is good to see the 5X limit happening more and more often too.

  1. This is highly confusing. All these comments are for a 2018 promo, and the “Key Terms” above say Valid 8/16/19–8/22/19. We are in August 2020. Can we please see current information?

    • Kerry it is a deal that kicked off this week 8/16-8/22. It was listed at the top and the picture of the ad had this week’s info. Updated the 19 to 20 on the dates, sorry for the mix up and any confusion.

  2. 10 in one transaction today! Definitely ymmv. This was store #2 I hit up. When I walked in store #1 towards the gc rotating display, an employee goes “looking for the 200 denominations? Yeah, we already got wiped out of those.”

  3. Mmmm…so I think Chase may be monitoring these promotions as I have had Chase asking about them. Not unusually high volumes however Stapkes and the card amounts as fixed.
