Staples Visa Gift Card Deal

Staples Visa Gift Card Deal

Staples sells a variety of Visa & Mastercard gift cards. Depending on the value (up to $200) the fee to purchase these can cost as much as $6.95. They do often run rebate promos on these cards. This coming week, they are waiving $5 off the fees on Visa gift cards.

UPDATE 4/8/21: A new sale kicks off next week.

The Offer

  • $5 off the fee when you buy a $200 Visa® Gift Card

Key Terms

  • Valid 4/11/21 – 4/17/21.
  • The Visa Gift Card is issued by MetaBank
  • Limit 5 per customer.

You can find the full terms in the upcoming ad on page 7.

Maximizing This Deal

There’s a limit of 5 per customers. Cards like the Chase Ink Plus, Ink Cash and Amex SimplyCash Plus will all earn 5X/5% back on these purchases. I also assume you may be able to visit multiple stores and/or ask to do multiple transactions despite the terms, but that is obviously YMMV.

Liquidating Visa Gift Card

The Visa gift card is pin-enabled. The PIN number is usually the last four digits of the card number. You can utilize my previous liquidation strategy or simply use it for normal spend.

It’s nice to see Staples bring back this offer, as many 5X sources have been drying up lately. Most people probably prefer Visa gift cards, so this is your opportunity to fill up your Ultimate Rewards accounts. This isn’t as good as the fee free sales but paying $1.95 for 1,000 Ultimate Rewards points (worth $15) is still a good deal.  It is good to see the 5X limit happening more and more often too.

  1. I just think the limits are too low. What’s 1.000 miles worth in this day and age? To make it serious you would have to go to 5 Staples per day every day during the promo period which would net you 30.000 points. But still, all that time and hassle + $60 in fees + fees to liquidate just get you 30.000 points. Thanks for posting but unless the clerk allows me to buy all the VGCs they have in stock at once I think I will pass

  2. Does the AMEX offer $40 off $10 for Staples work? It says: Not valid for gift cards in bulk purchases. However if I only buy one $200 gift card, would it be counted as bulk purchase?

  3. Hello!
Where should I buy the Visa Gift card to earn 5X miles? In the store? Or online through Ultimate Rewards? I have Chase Sapphire Reserve.

    Thank you.

    • You can’t get 5X Ultimate Rewards with the Sapphire Reserve card. You need to get a Chase Ink Cash card to earn 5X at office supply stores.
