Staples Visa gift card deal

Staples Visa Gift Card Deal

This past week has been a great one for those who love Staples. First, we have the ongoing Mastercard deal and then yesterday American Express released their Amex Offer for Staples. They say great things come in three and Staples has delivered. Starting on Sunday they are running another Staples Visa gift card deal. HT: Frequent Miler

The Details

Staples Visa Gift Card deal

Much like the Mastercard promotion that is going on this week, the new deal offers a $20 rebate after the purchase of $300 in gift cards. (Limit 1 per household.) The only differences are this time you have to purchase Visa gift cards and the rebate comes in the form of a $20 prepaid Visa card.

The Visa gift cards that Staples sells are issued by Metabank and are very easy to load to Bluebird/Serve. Additionally, the fact that the rebate comes in the form of a Visa is an improvement, since you aren’t stuck with a Staples gift card.

How to Make Money with this Staples Visa Gift Card Deal

Staples sells $100 Visa gift cards for a $5.95 fee and $200 Visa gift cards for a $6.95. The best scenario is to use your Chase Ink or Amex Simply Cash Business Card which earn 5x back at office supply stores. I personally will use my Chase Ink, so I will refer to it in my math.

Note: If you have a Chase Ink Visa card, it also earns an additional 1% cash back with Visa Savings Edge (Register here).

Two $200 Gift Cards

  • Cost: $413.90 ($206.95*2)
  • Rebate: $20
  • Final Cost: $393.90 ($389.76 w/Visa Savings Edge)
  • Profit: $6.10 ($10.24 w/Visa Savings Edge)
  • 5x Points Earned With Chase Ink2070

One $100 Gift Card & One $200 Gift Card

  • Cost: $312.90 ($206.95 + $105.95)
  • Rebate: $20
  • Final Cost: $292.90 ($289.77 w/Visa Savings Edge)
  • Profit: $7.10 ($10.23 w/Visa Savings Edge)
  • 5x Points Earned With Chase Ink1565

With the 2x $200 card option, you end up paying $1 more up front, however you get an additional 505 points. I value those points at around $10 personally, so that will be my strategy.  If you do plan to purchase $200 cards, make sure to go early, since the $200 cards generally run out quickly during these promos.

This Staples Visa gift card deal is almost identical to other deals they have run in the past. With the rebate being paid in the form of a Visa gift card, it is an improvement over this week’s Mastercard promotion in my opinion. I have already made a couple of trips to Staples this week, however I think I will be back there on Sunday morning. How about you?

  1. Tempted to use my Staples AMEX Sync promo with this. I have 4 cards with the Sync promo ($20 off $100). So if I bought 2 x $200 Visa gift cards tomorrow at Staples, how likely is it (and how lame would it be!?!) that a cashier would split the $400+ for the two Visas onto $100 at a time on 4 different AMEX’s?

And nice heads up on the Staples coupons. I’ll take some free bottled water! 🙂

    • At my local Staples they are unable to split tender onto multiple credit cards. Other people have told me their local stores are the same way.

I had thought that I had split tender at Staples before, but apparently I must have mixed it up with Officemax or Office Depot.

My best guest is that you won’t be able to pay with multiple cards, but it doesn’t hurt to ask.
