Staples Visa Gift Cards

Staples Visa Gift Card Rebate Deal

Staples will have the first negative cost Visa gift card deal of the year coming next week. This $20 rebate is the best of this kind from Staples and you can generate 5X points as well. Let’s take a look!

The Deal

  • Get a $20 Visa prepaid card by mail with your Visa gift card purchase of $300 or more.

Key Terms

  • Deal valid from 1/14/18 through 1/20/18
  • In-store only.
  • Limit 1 rebate per name/address/household.

Maximizing the Deal

staples visa rebate

This deal is usually best maximized by using a card that earns 5X at office supply stores like the Chase Ink Plus or Chase Ink Cash. You can also use an Amex SimplyCash Plus which earns 5% cashback at office supply stores.

Using the Chase Ink, the optimal strategy is to purchase 2 of the $200 cards which cost $206.95 each. Here is the math:

  • Cost: $413.90
  • Minus Rebate: $20 (resale value of $16.60)
  • Cash Profit: $2.70
  • UR Points Earned: 2,070

You could also purchase a $200 card and a $100 card, but the savings of $1 on fees doesn’t justify the loss of 500 Ultimate Rewards points on the extra $100 in spend.

Liquidating Visa Rebate Card

The rebate will come in the form of a Visa gift card that IS pin-enabled. The PIN number is the last four digits of the card number. You can utilize my previous liquidation strategy or simply use it for normal spend.

These deals are nice if you have a Staples nearby, and it’s surprising that they have another deal so soon, since the same deal just ended last week. Stock tends to run out quickly through, especially for the $200 denominations,so I wouldn’t go far out of the way to get the cards. While this deal won’t make your Ultimate Rewards balance swell too much, it is a way to pickup a chunk of points and a few dollars too. If you have some friends, parents or neighbors that won’t mind you using their address, you can get some extra rebates.

  1. Before I click purchase – where does it have the $20 offer listed? I see the gift card purchase, but don’t see anywhere about the $20 (not even showing in my shopping cart as an offer).

  2. You can also earn 5x if you pay with AndroidPay, ChasePay, ApplePay or SamsungPay linked to a Chase Freedom card 🙂 The Freedom Q1 categories include anything paid for with those digital “wallets.”

  3. My Walmart in PDX will not take VGC for MO purchase. I’ve tried 3 x with same response. Anyone else having this problem? Thanks,

    • Are they refusing them before you swipe or do they let you swipe and they don’t work? If they are stopping you before you purchase them that is a YMMV type of thing. One near me says no unless my name is on the card – so I went to another location where they don’t care at all. I would say try another one in the area if possible.

      • Refusing before I even have opportunity to swipe. Flat out no go and I’ve tried on a couple different days.
I’ll try another WM, but now pretty much using for all spend that will take the cards.

  4. Hey Mark have one last question for you! So when buying the 2 $200 VGC’s..if I want to also use friends and family addresses to get more than one rebate do I need to make separate transactions? I assume its ok to use the same credit card as well. Thanks again!

    • Not sure on that one – I have never pressed it on my own. Yes you would need to do separate transactions but I would think the same card would be ok.

  5. So i bought a few of these yesterday and went to my usual walmart to buy some MOs but the cards were declined.. Do these cards from Staples need to be activated? Never had this issue with VGCs from OMOD..

    • No they are activated when you purchase them. Did you try calling the number on back of the card to ensure the balance loaded properly? Sometimes they take a few hours to fully activate. I would make sure there is a balance and then maybe change the pin and give it another try.

      • I haven’t tried calling the number yet but i did go online to verify the balance. I bought the cards yesterday morning so I’m sure it’s been long enough. Guess i will have to try changing the pin to see if that works, otherwise it may be possible my Walmart won’t allow gift cards for MOs anymore?

        • I would doubt that – we probably would have heard something about it from other people by now. If it doesn’t work again I would maybe try a small purchase somewhere else and see if it works for that.

          • Oh also worth mentioning that the cashier seemed new and may not have known how to do a multiple card MO transaction properly..

          • Interesting – I would look to that as the issue honestly. They just recently updated their system where you need to sign a paper slip after they print the money order etc. They may have been trying to do it the old way.

          • So I went to check my balance online again and saw the declined transactions. Turns out cashier was trying to debit more than was available on the card. Told her i wanted 200 on each card but she was doing 400 on each card. Ill try again later and pay more attention next time!
