Office Depot Visa Gift Card Rebate

Office Depot and Officemax have a new profitable promotion this week with a discount on Visa gift card. It’s being promoted in stores. Let’s take a look at the details.

The Offer

  • Save $15 instantly when you buy $300 of Visa Gift Cards.

Key Terms

  • Limit one (1) offer per customer.
  • Discount applied at register.
  • Offer valid 4/14 – 4/20/19.
  • Offer valid in store on Visa Gift Cards only.

While the limit of 1 is probably hard-coded into the register, some stores will allow you to do multiple transactions. This varies from store to store and even sometimes from cashier to cashier!

The Math

You can purchase $200 Visa gift cards with a $6.95 fee.

Generally the best option is to purchase 2 of the $200 Visa gift cards. When doing so, the math works out like this:

  • Cost of cards: $413.90
  • Minus instant rebate: -$15
  • Final cost: $398.90
  • Profit: $1.10 (Plus 5X Earning)

It is best to pay with a card that earns 5X at office supply stores such as a Chase Ink Cash/Plus. For example, a Chase Ink card would earn 1,995 Ultimate Rewards pointsAlternatively, an Amex SimplyCash Plus which earns 5% cashback at office supply stores would earn you $19.95 cashback. But might be best to steer clear of gift card purchases with Amex cards.

Visa gift cards sold by Officemax/Office Depot are issued by Metabank and are pin-enabled. These cards should work fine to load Bluebird/Serve at Walmart and work many other places. For more detailed information on liquidating these cards, see: How To Liquidate Prepaid Visa & Mastercard Gift Cards

This is probably the best deal you’ll see from Office Depot and OfficeMax. It’s a good way to add more Ultimate Rewards points to your account especially with many 5X opportunities drying up.

Happy 5Xing!

    • Nope by cardmember year. It should tell you when you log into the UR website how much of the 25K you have spent.

  1. I bought several visa gift card from Office Depot , but My Chase statement didn’t give 5 times return Should I call and ask them?

      • Yes, I used chase ink cash. I just checked my statement today, and the statement only give me one point for 1 $ . Do chase stop giving out 5 points on gift card?.any one has the same problem?

        • I have not heard of anyone else having trouble – very strange. If it is worth calling depends on how much the purchase was (how many points you missed out on) and if you mind them potentially looking at your history in more detail. If it is worth the risk or not is a decision you would have to make on your own. I personally would probably let it slide – probably not worth the risk for me.

  2. I always take advantage of these office depot GC sales normally going back in with my Spouse so we can double up with her using her own card as a separate customer. Sometimes I even pass by the same store and other stores in the AM & PM. Today in Waikele, HI last day of the sale of of the store employees in decided to push my buttons. My spouse made her purchase I’m waiting on line and the employee comes to the register and tell me she can not let me purchase the GCs. I ask why? She said I noticed you two in here yesterday and you got away with it but it’s only 1 transaction per “household”. I said thats false its 1 per customer she told me no I can not sell it to you I walked out but then wanting to prove her wrong I walked back in to show her the sale sign and of course she quickly removed it from the rack. Just insane why they would make such a big deal about it and go as far to saying its 1 per household. How could the store even prove 2 people are living under the same roof? Its nonsense

  3. The variable everywhere cards also work for the discounts and their fees are $2 less than the fixed $200’s so total comes up to $394.90 which gives a $5.10 profit for $400 worth, not counting the URs with Ink CCs.

As always, limits are set by the store; some have none.
