Ebates Overview
Ebates is the largest cash back portal in the business. They work with over 2000 stores to bring you discounts on your purchases. They also work for cash hotel bookings…earn cash back while racking up stay credits and loyalty points!
Ebates is one of the few portals that also offers in store cash back and they have a couple of very lucrative partners right now.
I find myself using Ebates often because of the easy button that I attached to my browser. It alerts me when I am on a site that has an Ebates offer. I always try to check cashbackmonitor.com to ensure I am getting the best deal. If it is about equal I usually use Ebates because of how easy the attachment makes the process. Ebates tends to track better than other portals for me as well.
The program is easy to use, you just have to remember to go to Ebates before making your purchases online or in the store to rack up cash back for your purchases. Ebates will then PayPal you your accrued balance every 3 months or you can get a bonus for cashing it out via a gift card etc. I have been racking up several hundred dollars each quarter.
Using shopping portals is something everyone should be doing. It is one of the things I have improved upon over the last few years but I need to do better.

Conclusion
Shopping portals are an important tool that help you reduce your costs when making purchases online. They are also instrumental in reselling, they can turn a good deal into a GREAT deal.
Ebates happens to be one of the better portals out there when it comes to variety of participating stores and tracking. Just make sure to compare it with other portals before committing to your purchase.
You may want to try out the browser attachment if you find yourself forgetting to click through portals often. It can also get you cash back on deals you otherwise wouldn’t.

As a counter DP: I have used eBates for a year or so and they have always been great. I have gotten the cash back I expected and never had an issue with any purchases. Anecdotally, I have friends with the same experience. But if more people read those bad experiences, maybe I’ll have better odds to win the gift card. 🙂
Haha that last line gave me a good laugh 🙂
Mark,
There response was somewhat cold and curt.
For more information, please contact the merchant directly. As we are obligated to abide by the merchant’s reporting, your account will remain deactivated.
Per our terms:
“Any failure to comply with this Program Agreement, any fraud or abuse relating to the accrual or receipt of cash back rewards, or any misrepresentation of any information furnished to Ebates or its affiliates by you or anyone acting on your behalf may result in the termination of your membership in the Program and forfeiture of your accrued Cash Back rewards.” *
That sucks. It looks like there isn’t much you can do with the terms but you would like to think they would reconsider since it was such a small amount.
“The drawing ends May 28th!” Is that a typo?
Yes it was – thanks Mr G 🙂
Mark,
To be fair, there’s no way to unlink your card and get cashback on normal purchases. I buy regular stuff at Office Depot because I’m a teacher and need school supplies for my students. I linked my ink cash card because I want to use my 5% card with the in store cash back. I also buy gift cards because they’re a good deal. I don’t buy $10,000 worth like some of your readers. I think I had $15 in cashback from gift cards when I got shut down and $90+ in regular purchases that aren’t against their T&Cs. I would not even have a problem with Ebates if they gave me that $90+ of legit purchases and shut me down.
Their programmers are incompetent and the way they get around Ebates uses their incompetence in their favor by stealing the rest my cash back.
Mark, I love MtM and you’re my favorite of the MtM team (sorry Bethany and Shawn). Ebates is wrong on this issue and they should be called out for it.
I’m sorry that this might hurt MtM. I’ll continue to use your referral links whenever possible to support your great website. I just feel like you’re getting into bed with a shady company.
Good points JJ. I agree that they seem to have a IT issue that let’s through purchases that should be fixed on their end. I also agree that they seem shutdown happy when it does happen versus just voiding the cash back in question – unless all of the purchases are gift cards etc. We have covered it in the past and I wish it would be corrected. Were you ever able to get a response out of them about the legit purchases that were still owed on?
Ebates builds in the ability to steal your earned cash back. Try buying gift cards and they’ll shut down your account and won’t pay out a penny. Plus, if you manage to actually get paid, they only pay out once per quarter so you have to wait 3 months for your money. There are so many better portals with higher cashback.
To be fair gift cards are in the terms as not payable so if you go after the bonus for them you should know it comes with risks.
