36 Cruise Ship Crew Members Test Positive for COVID-19
Cruise ships were hot spot for coronavirus outbreaks early on. Several stories broke out early on where passengers had to stay aboard and quarantine for weeks. Compared to airlines and hotels, the cruise ship industry has seen a slower rebound. However, some companies have started sailing and already there are new outbreaks.
Hurtigruten’s MS Roald Amundsen is one of the first ships to resume cruising in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. But the ship had to be docked in Norway after many crew members tested positive.
All 158 crew members on Hurtigruten’s expedition ship were tested and 36 of them have tested positive for COVID-19. Five guests have also tested positive. The ship is currently docked in Tromsø, Norway with no guests on board. None of the 154 crew members still on board the ship has shown any signs of disease or symptoms of COVID-19.
The ship had taken two trips so far. 209 guests from the first voyage and 178 guests from the July 24 departure will self-quarantine in line with Norwegian health authority regulations. The ship hold 539 passengers but was operating at half capacity.
