Baloney on the CNN landings! The most spectacular landing and takeoff are at Tenzing-Hillary Airport in Lukla, Nepal. One end is a steep cliff, on the other the side of a mountain. It has gotten a lot safer since I visited when it was guarded by pillboxes and barbed wire against Maoist guerillas. You take off from Kathmandu and get to cruising altitude and you don’t descent to land.
I disagree with some of the spectacular landings. Many, I agree with, such as Santos Dumont (Rio de Janiero), Santiago de Chile, and San Francisco. The article did not list Gibraltar, London City, Lukla (Nepal), Washington National.
Surprised that San Diego did not make it onto this list given the very close fly-by of downtown you often get when landing there (especially compared to some of the other relatively pedestrian options in the article). Also, Washington National’s river approach. For my money, taking off out of Oakland gets you better views of San Francisco and the Golden Gate Bridge than does SFO.
