  1. Back in the 1950s, then-Captain Joseph Kittinger parachuted from such a gondola at over 100k feet up (essentially space). He free-fell for the first 90k feet. What guts! He was the first person to exceed the speed of sound . . . without propulsion. He’s still alive — at 94 years old.
