Fremont Street Experience Blocks Non Hotel Guests From NYE Celebration

Las Vegas is expecting a massive swarm of people hitting the city for the New Years celebration.  There are no fireworks, live music, clubs or major events of any kind but people want to ring in 2021 in Vegas it seems.  So much so that 200,000 people are expected to be in town this weekend.  At least one part of Vegas is making changes because of this: Fremont Street Experience blocks non hotel guests from the New Years Eve celebration.

Details

We talked about the Fremont Street Experience NYE celebration in this week’s MtM Vegas YouTube episode (I’ll add the video below).  There wasn’t much in terms of entertainment but the Fremont Street Experience was still going to charge visitors a $25 security fee to join in.  They were going to block off access to Fremont, besides a few checkpoints, like they normally do for New Years Eve.  It appears they worried about the numbers getting out of hand and have since changed the rules to the event, mere hours before it is set to happen.

Now only hotel guests can access Freemont Street during the New Years Eve event.  They were originally going to be allowed free entry but outside people would be allowed as well after paying. This looks to be a way to try to control the crowds so another Labor Day doesn’t happen on the pedestrian mall. Security would have a near impossible time enforcing social distancing requirements with the crowds that were expected and they will probably still struggle with it even after these changes.

They had originally expected as many as 14,000 people to be on the pedestrian mall area tonight. According to Las Vegas Review Journal the plan received backlash from members of the state’s COVID-19 Mitigation and Management Task Force on Tuesday, with COVID response director Caleb Cage saying this the plan would “have a significant impact on our ability to maintain and control the spread of the virus in the state, especially given that fact that we’re at hospital capacity right now.”

The access restriction will be for in place from 6PM till 4AM. Only hotel guests over 21 staying at Binion’s, the California, Circa, the D Las Vegas, Four Queens, Fremont, Golden Gate and Golden Nugget with a valid wristband will be allowed entry into the area.

Final Thoughts

The final tallies of how many people will enter the Fremont Street Experience tonight are still unknown. With over 5,000 rooms available at those hotels it will still likely be a large number. I am not sure what they expected when setting all of this up in the first place but it seems like a lot of people will be caught by surprise by the last minute change.

Anyone that already paid the $25 security fee will receive a full refund plus a free ride on the SlotZilla zipline.
