Hyatt Retroactively Counting Award Stays Towards Status
According to Ed at Pizza in Motion Hyatt has been crediting 2017 award stays towards status. This is a pretty surprising move by a hotel chain. We all knew that award stays counted going forward in 2018 but this is going above and beyond. If only they had warned people before they did mattress runs to end the year :(.
How This Helps
If you ended up coming a few nights short on reaching the next level of status with Hyatt but had award stays throughout the year this could push you over the top. Also if you fell a few nights short of the next bonus pay out you may be getting that now.
Let’s say you just barely reached Globalist status but had some award stays throughout the year, when booking with cash or cash and points didn’t make sense. If that pushes you to 70 or 80 nights then you will get 10,000 points for every 10 nights past 60, up to the 100 mark. That could be 40,000 unexpected Hyatt points if you went to the extreme. I think a lot of people will be getting a bonus of 10,000 or 20,000 points because of this.
There are also a lot of us out there that don’t go for status but love the Hyatt brand and stay exclusively on award nights, I include myself in this group. This could easily earn you Discoverist status. It isn’t the sexiest status but it gets you a few small perks.
Conclusion
This is a bold move by Hyatt that wasn’t really expected. I imagine they are trying to win some good will back after the flop that is World of Hyatt was announced last year.
Did you get any unexpected gifts or an increase in status? Ed has a copy of the letter on his site if you want to see it.
