JetBlue Gets Rid of 27 Routes for the Summer

Travel demand is making a big comeback, inching close to pre-pandemic levels. That’s good news for airlines who were already adding new routes, anticipating a big summer rebound. But higher fuel prices are forcing them to reevaluate their plans.

Longer-haul routes that consume more jet fuel are now starting to be less and less profitable for carriers. So some of them, including JetBlue are adjusting summer schedules accordingly.

Simple Flying reports that the New York based airline is cutting or postponing 27 routes, based on the carrier’s latest schedule filing. The average length of the 27 routes is 1,539 miles, which is 25% longer than JetBlue’s system average in March.

Only two routes, Austin and Nashville to Cancun, have been scrapped for good. The other 25, including many to destinations in Florida, will pause over the summer. They are expected to return later in the fall, either in October or November.

But, even with the recent cuts, JetBlue has 2.2% more flights between May and September than in 2019, according to Cirium data.

  1. Surprised they cut FLL to Cayman and Turks and Caicos. These are short, sub two hour flights and demand for premier Caribbean destinations could scarcely be higher. I’m sure AA down the road at MIA is grinning about this news.
