Amex Cards Will No Longer Be an Option for Serve Backup Funding
There’s some bad news for those who have and still use American Express Serve cards. They sent out an email notifying card holders that starting in April, you can no longer use an Amex card as a funding source for backup funding for your account.
After March 31, 2019, we’ll no longer accept American Express® Credit Cards as a Payment Funding Source for Backup Funding on your American Express Serve® Account, and only linked debit cards will be accepted as a Payment Funding Source for Backup Funding. Please know that after March 31, 2019, you can continue to add funds to your Account using the American Express Card linked to your Serve Account.
Action may be required
To have access to Backup Funding, you must elect to have a linked debit card as a Payment Funding Source for Backup Funding.
If you already elected to have a linked debit card as a Payment Funding Source for Backup Funding, there is no action needed and that card will remain a Payment Funding Source for Backup Funding.
You can elect a linked debit card as a Payment Source for Backup Funding by logging into your Account on Serve.com and selecting “Link Bank & Cards” under “Settings”. To use a new debit card, enter your card information to link it to your Account and then elect to have the linked card as a Payment Funding Source for Backup Funding.
Conclusion
Cards issued directly from American Express no longer earned points with Serve and it didn’t count towards minimum spend. But you can still use cards such as Wells Fargo Propel, PenFed, Fidelity etc. It’s not clear if just backup funding will end for Amex cards, or normal loading will also be affected.

Was there a limit to how much backup funding could be used? I know there is a $1000 monthly load limit from a credit card.
