Save Money On Spirit Airlines Flights: 5 Great Tips & Tricks!

Spirit Airlines has become a more and more competent airline over the last half decade.  They used to rank at the bottom in pretty much every statistical airline ranking ever put out but they have been changing that.  Now they are one of the best, and sometimes THE best, airlines at on time arrivals.  They rank higher than mega airlines United and American on a regular basis in best airlines rankings these days.  They have slowly changed the narrative and because of that more and more people are flying them, myself included. Spirit Airlines is usually one of the cheapest tickets out there but we can do better.  I want to share 5 tips and tricks on how to save money on Spirit Airlines flights.

How To Save Money On Spirit Airlines

I have to give reader Douglas pretty much all of the credit here.  He was willing to share some of his great tips with me so that I could in turn share them with you.  Thanks again Douglas! So let’s get to it:

1. Purchase Your Tickets At The Airport

I have talked about this tip in the past but it is worth mentioning again.  There is a fee for booking your Spirit Airlines tickets online of $20 per person each way.  This is true of all low cost carriers like Frontier and Allegiant etc. For a family of four that can add up to $160 in savings for round trip flights.  All for simply driving to the airport to purchase the tickets.  If you want more detail on how to do it click here.

Now this is best for trips that you can get by with a backpack because luggage charges are more if you do it after booking. You could only get a suitcase for one person and then use backpacks for everyone else etc. and still come out ahead.  But be sure to crunch ALL the numbers before driving to the airport to save money on your Spirit Airlines flights.

2. Take A Gamble On The Big Front Seat

I am a fan of the Big Front Seat.  I just booked it again with my American Express Aspire card incidental credits – a perfect use for it with the recent changes. But Douglas has a way you can save some money on them if you are willing to gamble a bit. Once the clock strikes 24 hours out from your flight the price on these seats drops. This probably works best if it is a solo trip.  But if you want to go all Spirit Airlines bougie then it could pay to wait on booking those seats!

3. Check Both Spirits Airlines Flights Online & On The App

If you are unable to make it to the airport to purchase your tickets and need to buy them online be sure to check the website AND the app.  The prices don’t always match and sometimes one or the other may be a little cheaper.  So be sure to search your flights on both before hitting that submit button.

4. Promo Codes End Dates Are Not Always Solid

Spirit Airlines loves to send out sales, sometimes as much as 99% off.  These are usually short lived sales and they come with a promo code.  Douglas has been able to get these to work a day or two after they are supposed to end from time to time. So it is worth trying the code if you miss the cut off date but find an awesome flight.  He said do it online though, the app will always show an error.

5. Check Those Bundle Prices One Way At A Time

Last tip of the day.  If you are booking the bundles (gives you seats and luggage when booking online) be sure to check them one way at a time.  Sometimes this is cheaper than booking a roundtrip flight with the bundles.  It appears if the fare is on the lower end the packages tend to be a little cheaper.  So if one way is quite a bit less than the other way you could get a little bit of savings booking them as two one ways.  Be sure to check it out before you book anything.

Final Thoughts

Spirit Airlines is becoming more and more prevalent in our travel patterns.  And more and more people are starting to give them a try again.  Sure they still have their issues, but there are ways to combat that. If you are one that is willing to give Spirit a try or are already flying them be sure to use these tips on how to save money on Spirit Airlines.

  1. I like Spirit and you have a few good tips on this post so thanks. Being a Spirit fan and even a Spirit credit cardholder my biggest complaint about them is the poor availability of good award ticket routes. They have such a weird route system it can make it hard to get good value out of the miles you earn. When you add the 90-day point expiration policy it’s even worse.

    • Plus with how much the taxes and fees are it doesn’t even make sense on a lot of the 2500 mile flights. I don’t even care about accruing their miles, unless you want magazine subscriptions.
