Switch Your Rakuten Account to Earn Amex Points

Switch Your Rakuten Account to Earn Amex Points

Rakuten (formerly known as Ebates), recently introduced a different account option. You earn Membership Rewards points instead of cashback. You earn one points instead of one cent, so that’s clearly the preferable option for many frequent travelers that value these points over 1.5 cents each at least.

One issue with this was that the new account was only available for new customers who sign up for it (there’s also a 1,500 points bonus). If you already have a cashback version, you could not switch over. But now Rakuten has finally made that possible.

You can just go to your Account Setting and there you will see this new option, “Switch to Membership Rewards points”. You can always switch back to earning cashback.

Conclusion

Good news for those that want to keep the same account. Especially those who have the  the Ebates card. They no longer have to cancel the card and reapply to be able to earn Membership Rewards points.

Just be aware that while you will be able to earn points once you switch, cashback that you have already earned with not be converted to Membership Rewards points.
