Wyndham Reveals Hotel Category Changes and Further Devalues Vacasa

Wyndham Rewards will make annual adjustments to award pricing for some of its properties on March 26, 2024.

The company says that only 3% of hotels will move to a higher tier, while 4% will move to a lower one. But Wyndham has not shared the list of properties that will change categories later this month.

For members who book a hotel with points before the refresh and encounter a subsequent shift to a higher tier, the original booking rate will be honored. Additionally, if a member books a hotel with points before the refresh, and the hotel subsequently moves to a lower tier, Wyndham will proactively adjust the booking to reflect the lower rate.

But there’s also another Vacasa devaluation that was announced along these changes. The value of your Wyndham Rewards will soon be under 2 cents per points when booking Vacasa properties.

Here’s what Wyndham has shared about Vacasa bookings:

  • Vacasa bookings will be available at both 15,000 pts/bedroom/night and 30,000 pts/bedroom/night.

Which tier a rental falls into will be determined by the rental’s average cost of a bedroom per night, inclusive of all taxes and fees.

  • Rentals with an average cost of $250/night will be 15,000 pts/bedroom/night.
  • Rentals with an average cost of $500/night will be 30,000 pts/bedroom/night.

Conclusion

It’s difficult to rate the hotel category changes as we don’t know which properties are affected.

But as far as Vacasa goes, this is another devaluation after the one back in October. With this new procong system, you can still get a decent value for your Wyndham Rewards, but it will be under 2 cents per point.
