Hyatt Cardholder Rebate Promotion
Last year Hyatt offered an amazing deal giving a 20% points rebate to cardholders of their co-branded Chase card. That deal got me to sign up for the card and I enjoyed stays in Kauai among other places for 20% less than normal. Today Hyatt has sent me a similar deal, although the rebate is only 10%. Let’s take a look.
The Offer
- Redeem your Hyatt Gold Passport points for a free night and get 10% of your redeemed points back.
Key Terms
- The promotion is valid only for Hyatt Credit Cardmembers who receive this promotion from Hyatt and register for the promotion between 7/11/2016 and 8/31/2016.
- To qualify for this bonus offer, account must be open and not in default at the time of fulfillment.
- Only points redeemed between 7/11/2016 and 10/31/2016 will be eligible for this promotion.
- If a redemption is connected to a stay, the entire stay must be completed by 10/31/2016.
- You will receive 10% back on the Hyatt Gold Passport points you redeem for award stays, points + cash, suite upgrades and dining and spa activities.
- Please allow 6-8 weeks after your points redemption has been completed for your bonus Hyatt Gold Passport points to be loaded into your account.
How It Works & How to Register
- Register for this promotion by August 31, 2016.
- Book a stay – with points or Points + Cash – and complete your stay by October 31, 2016. Free nights at any Category 1 property start at just 5,000 points.
- Get 10% of your redeemed points back. Your points will be deposited directly into your Hyatt Gold Passport account after your completed stay.

Analysis
Update: Previously booked stays will be eligible for the rebate.
Even if it is not as good as last year’s 20% rebate, this is still a great deal. The only downside is that the rebate only applies to redemptions during the promotional period, meaning if you have stays that are already booked, they won’t count. This really stinks for me given that I have some very expensive redemptions coming up, but I certainly understand the restriction. This is designed to drive new business.
Conclusion
I just paid the annual fee on my Hyatt credit card because I see the free night as an offset of the annual fee plus I value the ability to spend my way towards stay credit as well. How about Guest of Honor bookings? Did they work last year? Anyone know?
I did confirm with Hyatt that previous reservations work and that new cardholders can also register for it (not through the website though). Good news!

Previously booked reservations count. Even though Hyatt deducted the points at the time of booking, they aren’t redeemed until the stay.

So if I already have an award stay booked for this date range, would I need to rebook in order to get the refund. It says points “redeemed between 7/11/2016 and 10/31/2016”. Are my points technically already redeemed for an August stay since they are deducted from my account?
The way I understand it previously booked stays won’t count. The language indicates the points would have to be redeemed from your account during those dates. Points are deducted at booking and thus I don’t believe you will be eligible for the rebate without rebooking. Of course if cancelling and rebooking is possible, that should be an easy fix.
In my case I used DSUs from last year so I can’t cancel. 🙁
I’d be surprised if previously booked stays don’t count. I wrote Hyatt a couple of hours ago so we’ll see what they say. Someone commented on Travel Codex, saying they called and were told it does count on existing reservations. Seems to me a good majority of reservations could be cancelled and rebooked no problem, so Hyatt wouldn’t bother with that restriction.
