30K Points Companion Pass

Get 30K Points & The Companion Pass After $4K In Spend (Targeted)

Southwest is once again offering some customers that chance to earn the Companion Pass with just $4,000 in spend. This credit card offer was sent out by snail mail. Let’s take a look at the details.

The Offer

This is a targeted offer for the Chase Southwest Rapid Rewards Plus Card:

  • Earn 30,000 points and a Companion Pass valid through 2/28/2022 after you spend $4,000 in the first 3 months.
  • The $69 annual fee is NOT waived the first year

30K Points The Companion Pass

That is the good stuff here is the bad stuff:
  • The Chase 5/24 rule applies
  • You can not receive the offer if you currently have another Southwest personal card
  • You can not receive the offer if you have received a personal Southwest credit card bonus in the last 24 months.

Companion Pass

The Companion Pass is a great deal.  When you have a companion pass you can designate someone to fly for free with you on every Southwest flight.  This includes cash flights or award flights (which you will have 34,000 miles for because of this offer).  All you need to do is pay the $11.20 taxes in fees roundtrip for domestic flights and $100 or so for international flights.

You can change your designated companion up to 3 times per year not including your first designation.  You must complete all companion designated flights before you can change it though.  So if you have a flight scheduled for April and then another one for May, with a different companion, you have to finish the April flight before changing your companion.  But you can book your ticket for the May flight and as long as there is one seat open your companion flies free. No matter the cost of the ticket!

Conclusion

This time around the offer is not as enticing, even if you are targeted. For 2021, Southwest is giving all Rapid Rewards Members a “boost” of 15,000 tier qualifying points and 10 flight credits toward A-List and A-List Preferred status, and 25,000 Companion Pass qualifying points and 25 flight credits toward Companion Pass status. That means that you only need to earn another 100,000 qualifying points to get the Companion Pass.

You get really close to it with just one credit card right now. Once you are done with the $10K spending requirement, you will have a total of 90,000 Rapid Rewards points, so you would just need 10,000 more points to get the Companion Pass through the end of 2022.

If Southwest flies out of your airport and you often fly with a family member or friend, then you really should consider going for the Companion Pass. It is easier to achieve it with this targeted offer, but if you want the Companion Pass for an extra 10 months, then the public offer is the better option.
