4th Quarter 5% Categories for Freedom Flex & Old Freedom
The Chase Freedom card has long been a great option to have in your wallet. Mark even calls it the one card everyone should get. But now we also have the Chase Freedom Flex card, which is even better. Both cards have the same rotating 5% quarterly categories, and now we know where we can earn that rate for the 4th quarter.
4th Quarter 5% Categories
The categories for the upcoming quarter are as follows:
- Qualifying purchases made at Walmart using PayPal only earn a total of 5%. Activate by December 14, 2020. Activation is not yet available, but you can check out the links below at a later date.
You will earn 5% back (or 5X Ultimate Rewards points) for your first $1500 in purchases from October 1 – December 31, 2020. This is a limit per card, so if you have an old Chase Freedom and the Freedom Flex, then you can earn 5% on $1,500 spend for each one.
In order to turn these points from straight cash back into actual Ultimate Rewards points you need to have one of the following Chase premium cards:
- Ink Preferred
- Sapphire Preferred
- Sapphire Reserve
- Ink Plus (no longer available)
If you have one of these cards you can combine the points from your Chase Freedom card with one of these cards. That unlocks the points and makes them transferable to travel partners or allows you to use them in the Chase Travel Portal for 25%-50% more value.
Conclusion
This is not quite as good as in years past. But Walmart is popular for resellers and others, especially around this time of year. So it should be easy to maximize.
Also don’t forget about the current 3rd quarter categories. You can earn 5% at Amazon and Whole Foods and you can even sign up your new Freedom Flex card for these categories if you do so by September 15.

Is this correct “Qualifying purchases made at Walmart using PayPal only earn a total of 5%”? I thought it is EITHER Walmart OR PayPal purchase not Walmart using PayPal.
Please clarify
That is what the offer page says on Chase’s site. I believe it is a typo but we copied it word for word with how they wrote it.
