Four Men Arrested After Opening 54 Amex Platinum Accounts in Japan

The Amex Platinum card is a great product. It’s made of metal and comes with tons of benefits. But is it worth getting arrested over it?

In Japan, four men tried to test it out and see how many Amex Platinum card they can get. They used fake employment and income information to a obtain total of 54 American Express Business Platinum cards between them, all in 2017. Besides signup bonuses, they also maximized their new accounts with referrals by accomplice Takada Masaki. They used information for non-existent businesses to get approved for the cards. And that got them in trouble four years later.

FNN.jp reports that all four men have been arrested by the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department on suspicions of credit card fraud. At the time of the arrest, American Express had managed to close 37 of the accounts, which means that they were still using 17 of their cards.

Conclusion

The information provided in the article is limited, but I don’t know if anyone would be able to pull this scam here in the United States, with the Amex RAT team always on alert. They have been going wild in recent years, clawing back a wide variety of bonuses and credits, even years after accounts are closed.

American Express has been pushing business cards to current cardholders, but 54 cards is still way too many. Plus, it’s mainly the fraudulent information that is the issue here, and not just the number of cards alone.
