5X Earnings at GiftCard Mart

GiftCard Mart sent out an email today that their merchant category code has been reclassified and you can now expect 5x the earnings on certain card purchases. They claim to have tested purchases with several different cards and have received both 5X Ultimate Rewards Points as well as 3X the earnings on Thank You Points.

As you all know, last week we were absolutely crushed when we got news that PayPal Digital Gifts and Card Cash were no longer coded to receive 5x Ultimate Rewards points. This is a great option if your card happens to be in stock on GiftCard Mart. Unfortunately, they have a small database of available cards with many being out of stock. Hopefully, this new development will drive some business their way and they will increase their stock. This is definitely a valid option going forward and will help soften the blow of last week’s news. Click here for more ideas on how to deal with gift card purchases going forward.

Details

Here are your expected earnings on each of these cards when shopping at GiftCard Mart:

  • Chase Ink Cash/Classic (Visa or Mastercard Versions): Earn 5% Cashback
  • Chase Ink Bold/Plus (Visa or Mastercard Versions): Earn 5x Ultimate Rewards
  • Chase Ink Preferred (Visa): Earn 3x Ultimate Rewards

Conclusion

This helps a little and I’m looking forward to making some purchases on GiftCard Mart. I would love to see comments from anyone who has made a purchase with them in the last month and if they did in fact code as 5x.

  1. There is no way for me to purchase through giftcardmart. The only option to pay that comes up is with paypal and i get error “We can’t place the order”

  2. I am a believer that Chase is going to really get ticked off at these merchants that are playing games with their merchant category code classifications. The reality is these cards are only supposed to be earning 5x on office supplies and internet/cable/phone. I wouldn’t be surprised if they stopped this pretty quickly. Just my thoughts.

    • I also believe that eventually they’ll shut down the whole reclassification process for retailers they believe are taking advantage.

  3. They need to get an infusion of supply, very limited stock. I am still a believer that CardCash won’t go quietly and will be back earning bonus points eventually. Will see how it plays out.

  4. Could someone please explain how the Chase Ink pays 5X UR points on online giftcards? I thought the 5X only applied to office supply stores and internet, cable and phone services.

    • It all depends on the MCC. They tested and apparently found the sweet spot where it triggers bonus categories for the cards outlined above.

I remember when I searched for grocery stores by MCC a few years ago and found an autobody/paint shop under the MCC. My guess is it used to be a small convenience store.
