Discover’s 3rd quarter bonus categories are now available for registration. This upcoming quarter, the 5% categories include Digital Wallets and Gas Stations. These categories should be easy to maximize!
How It Works
The Discover it card earns 5% cashback on up to the first $1,500 in bonus category spend per quarter. If you are able to fully maximize the benefit then you can earn $75 cash back every 3 months. That’s a total of $300 every year.
Activate
You have to activate the bonus before making your purchases in order to get the 5% back. The 1st quarter bonus categories can be activated now by visiting this page and logging into your account.

Here are the terms that explain which purchases will earn the 5% cashback in the 1st quarter:
- Gas Station purchases include those made at merchants classified as places that sell automotive gasoline that can be bought at the pump or inside the station, and public electric vehicle charging stations. Gas Stations affiliated with supermarkets, supercenters, and wholesale clubs may not be eligible.
- Digital Wallet purchases include some online purchases and some in-store purchases made with your smartphone, tablet, or wearable. Wallets that qualify include Apple Pay, Samsung Pay, Garmin Pay and in store with Google Pay. Apple Pay transactions included in this offer are transactions made in-store or online when using the Apple Pay button. Listed merchants are in no way sponsoring or affiliated with this program. Certain third-party payment accounts and digital wallet transactions may not earn 5% if Discover does not receive sufficient transaction detail for the purchase to be identified as being through a digital wallet. Discover does not determine the transaction details it receives for purchases. Using digital wallets to make purchases at gas stations will only earn a total of 5%.
Maximizing
Digital Wallets makes this quarter easy to maximize. You can basically get 5% back on most purchases, online and in-store. Popular wallets such as Apple Pay, Samsung Pay, and Google Pay are all included.
Gas Stations are also a popular category. Most Americans drive and spend hundreds on gas every month. Plus many of these merchants also sell third party gift cards.
That will make it easy to complete the $1,500 in spending from June till September 2023.
2nd Quarter Reminder
As a reminder Discover is paying 5% on Restaurants and Wholesale Clubs in the 2nd quarter (through June 30).
Get the Card
If you don’t have the Discover it card currently, you can earn double cashback your first year. That means you earn 2% cashback on normal purchases and 10% cashback on bonus category purchases.
