Airbnb Has Canceled the Great Wall of China Contest
The Great Wall of China is considered to be one of the wonders of the modern world. So obviously when Airbnb started a contest for the opportunity to spend a night inside one of the wall’s many towers, there was plenty of interest. Four people and their guests would have got the chance to sleep in a custom-designed “home” set in the UNESCO-listed structure.
But just a couple of days after, the contest was canceled. Apparently Airbnb didn’t have permission from China itself to rent out the Great Wall.
The contest was met with criticism on Chinese social media shortly after it was announced, the South China Morning Post reported. The Beijing Yanqing Cultural Commission also voiced its disapproval of the contest, saying it “is not in line with the Great Wall’s heritage conservation values” and that they had never approved the event.
According to Airbnb, the company had applied for permission to hold what it called a “residential lodging event” in one of the historic towers. The company claims it received the thumbs up from the powers that be and that’s when it began planning and promoting the event. Apparently somewhere along the way the disagreement started.
The stay looked magical, but sadly it will not happen.

“didn’t have permission from China itself to rent out the Great Wall”? Sort of like me running a contest to stay at the White House with 4 of your friends but forgetting to ask Trump.
