Alaska Allows Elites To Transfer Miles for Free
Alaska Airlines sent elite members an email about a new promotion that allows elite members to transfer their miles for free. The normal cost to transfer miles to friends and family is $25 plus $10 per 1,000 miles. If you were to transfer the maximum 40,000 miles, this could effectively save you $425.
Terms
- Members of Mileage Planâ„¢ with a status of MVP or above, can transfer up to a total of 40,000 Mileage Plan Miles and fees will be waived.
- You must make the transfer by 12/28/2017
- A maximum of three transfer transactions are allowed during the promotional period;
- Transfers of less than 1,000 Mileage Plan Miles are not permitted.
Analysis
This promotion is not terribly exciting, but it definitely has some valuable uses. You could transfer miles to someone who needs to top off their account for an award ticket. My favorite potential use pointed out to me by PDX Deals Guy is to gift 25K status to someone with orphaned miles. After the status takes effect you can then transfer their points into your own account. Points are more valuable for MVP Gold and MVP Gold 75k members because they can speculatively book award flights and cancel without fees.

I don’t understand. Would you please explain it? That sounds like gifting someone 25K miles would bring that person MVP status?? I thought miles gifted or transferred are not qualified for status.
HI Kris, 75K MVP’s are allowed to gift 25K status to one person. So you wouldn’t be gifting miles, you are gifting status. Does that make sense?
