Alaska & American Airlines Partnership Gutted Even Further

Back in 2018, Alaska Airlines and American Airlines gutted their partnership. Now they have notified loyalty program members that starting next year there’s more bad news for their partnership.

Partnership Details

What’s changing for Mileage Plan, effective March 1, 2020:

  • You will no longer earn Mileage Plan miles on American Airlines international flights.
  • You will no longer be able to redeem miles for award travel on American Airlines domestic or international flights.

And for American Airlines AAdvantage members:

  • You will no longer earn American AAdvantage miles on Alaska Airlines, with the exception of codeshare flights
  • You will no longer be able to redeem American AAdvantage miles for award travel on Alaska Airlines, both domestically and internationally

What’s not changing:

  • You’ll continue to earn a mile for every mile flown on eligible codeshare flights between the two airlines
  • Alaska Lounge members can continue to access American Admirals Clubs, and American Admirals Club members can continue to use Alaska Lounges, when flying on Alaska Airlines or American Airlines same day

Conclusion

This means that starting March 2020, the partnership between Alaska and American Airlines will be as good as dead. More bad news for AA after Delta took away LATAM from them.
