Once on the promotion page click the activate button to see if you are targeted. If you are, then you’ll need to pay with at least 1 Membership Rewards point and you’ll receive 20% off.
Paying With Points
In order to be eligible for this promotion, you need a card that earns Membership Rewards points linked to your account. You must also activate the Shop With Points feature for that card here. When checking out select that card and you should see the ability to pay with points. Make sure to only use 1 point as shown below so the rest will be charged to your card.
What to Buy
When this promotion started a few days ago, you could purchase Amazon gift cards at 20% off. Unfortunately that has now died, but third party gift cards work. Here are some ideas of what to buy.
Personal Use
There are a ton of gift cards to buy for personal use. From Uber to Safeway, this is a great way to lock in your future savings. Here are some examples.
There are a few types of cards that are profitable to resell. Keep in mind that you are giving up some of the discount by reselling and if you have a personal use, it might be a good idea to buy one of the brands above. There are hundreds of more as well.
Amazon runs promotions throughout the day with additional discounts. This 20% promotion should stack with those. It never hurts to check out today’s deals to see if there is anything worth buying.
Amazon Products
Amazon’s ecosystem is very popular and this could be a good way to lock in a savings on Amazon’s products. Keep in mind that Prime Day is coming up so you might get a bigger discount then on Kindle, Amazon Echo and Fire Tablet products. I personally would use this valuable 20% promotion on something else.
More Tips & Tricks
Pay with Amazon gift cards: It is possible to pay with Amazon gift cards instead of the linked American Express card, but only if they haven’t already been loaded to your account. If you have an unloaded Amazon gift card, you can input the code on the final payment screen to use it to pay.
Do It A 2nd Time: Some accounts (including two of mine) have been able to do this promotion more than once, especially if you did it the first time when the promotion first surfaced. It doesn’t hurt to try to activate and pay to see if you are getting the discount again.
Eligible Now Even If You Weren’t Before: I had one non-Prime account which wasn’t eligible when this promotion surfaced, but was eligible later on. Again, it doesn’t hurt to check.
$30 off $60: Some people are also targeted with a $30 off $60 promotion for using Membership Rewards. I haven’t received it, but you may just randomly see $30 coming off. If that’s the case you can just buy something for $60 and then use the 20% off on another order. More free money!
Conclusion
This truly has turned into one of the better deals of this year. My wife and I each have a personal account and we have a business account. Between those three accounts we were able to do this deal five times total for a combined savings of $500. Not bad!

Interesting. It isn’t working for most. Glad it is still working the old way for you!
