American Airlines Basic Economy Earn No Miles or Loyalty Points
American Airlines made an unannounced change on December 17 that affects AAdvantage members who purchase the cheapest fares. Now Basic Economy fares no longer earn miles or Loyalty Points.
The American Airlines website now notes:
Basic Economy fare tickets bought on or after 12:00 a.m. CT on December 17, 2025 will not earn Advantage® miles or Loyalty Points. For Basic Economy fare tickets bought on or before 11:59 p.m. CT on December 16, 2025, visit the AAdvantage® Earn page for the airline marketing your flight for details on the Advantage® miles and Loyalty Points you’ll earn.
Until now you could earn 2x AAdvantage miles and Loyalty Points for every dollar spent on Basic Economy fares. That was much lower than 5x earning on regular economy fares, but it still rewarded AAdvantage members for flying with American Airlines. Going forward, any new bookings will not earn miles or Loyalty Points.
