American Airlines to End Reduced Mileage Awards For Cardholders
American Airlines credit card holders have long enjoyed reduced mileage awards, with savings of up to 7,500 miles. Over 10 years ago these awards savings were limited mainly to domestic flights and some destinations in Canada. And now, they are going away altogether in October.
The announcement was added to the July statements of AAdvantage cardholders. Here’s the relevant text:
The Reduced Mileage Award benefit associated with your Citi / AAdvantage card will be discontinued as of October 1, 2021. As an AAdvantage member, you can save miles on award travel by booking a Web Special award. Like Reduced Mileage Awards, Web Special awards provide great savings – starting at 6,000 miles one-way.
Plus, Web Special awards are available on more flights and can be booked up to 330 days in advance. You can find Web Special awards when searching for award travel on aa.com and on the American mobile app – simply select “Redeem Miles” when starting your search.
American Airlines is promotion Web Special awards in the announcement, but this is not really a perk for cardholders. Anyone can access these lower award fares. You can check out the latest reduced mileage awards here.
Conclusion
This was is a good way to save on domestic award fares with American Airlines. To book book award travel you need to call 800-882-8880, which is not the most user friendly benefit. This will no longer be an option after September, so check out the list of current destinations and take advantage of these lower awards while they are available.

Doug Parker needs to go. How this man keeps his job is mind boggling.
Web specials can be decent but the only time I can find decent value is flying from an airport that is mostly served by their regional partners SkyWest, PSA, or Republic.
As the benefits of using a Citi / AAdvantage card are now reduced, how much will Citibank lower their annual fee to compensate for receiving a less useful Citibank credit card?
Yeah the value for miles and loyalty at AA has left the building for sure. These always seemed good but had limited uses for me. The web specials can be a good value but they are really inflexible and are dynamically priced. There is no accurate award chart at AA anymore.
