American Airlines Miles Start Expiring Again Tomorrow

Back in March, American Airlines paused mileage expiration as part of several measures to help its customers during the COVID-19 pandemic. Now mileage expiration for AAdvantage members has resumed again, and miles will begin expiring after 18 months of inactivity.

But that means 18 months from the last activity in your account, not 18 months from today. So if you last used or earned miles late in 2018, your miles could start expiring soon. If you are not sure when your last activity was, you can check your account here.

If you want to start booking awards, you are still able to do so and make free changes and cancellations, if you are traveling before 9/30/20.

No Miles Expiration for Members Under age 21

Minors and younger adults up to the age of 22 years and 6 months, are excluded from the miles expiration rule. Effective July 1, 2020, the 18-month activity requirement won’t apply to AAdvantage members under age 21. For members who turned 21 years of age before July 1, 2020, the 18-month qualifying activity period will be applied on a pro rata basis.

So if a member turned 21 on March 1, 2020, the 18-month qualifying activity period for this member will start on March 1, 2020. So if they don’t have qualifying activity in their account at least once in 18 months following their 21st birthday, miles will expire.

  1. Anyone dumb enough to allow miles to expire due to no activity for 18 months deserves what they get! People need to understand how easy it is to reset the time clock. Just register one of your credit cards with American’s dining plan and go they once (using that card to pay). Easy and painless. Then there are credit card charges, point purchases (horrible value but buy the minimum for $20-$30), and award redemptions. This doesn’t even count the shopping portal or earning through partners.

Again anyone that lets miles expire deserves because they are clueless or just don’t care.
