American Airlines Flies to Oakland for Last Time Today
Today on June 3rd, American Airlines will fly its last flight to Oakland Airport. The airline will fly its last flight to the airport in early June.
“We’re constantly evaluating our network to meet customer demand. Unfortunately, our service in Oakland was not profitable” a spokesperson for the airline told Fox News.
American Airlines will continue to fly into San Francisco International and Mineta San Jose International Airport. Both airports are in the same metropolitan area as Oakland.
American Airlines did not mention the coronavirus pandemic as the reason for ending service to Oakland International Airport, but that may very well be the case. Oakland is the first city that American is dropping indefinitely without plans to return.
Passengers who had flights booked to/from Oakland can cancel for a full refund. They can also choose to change their tickets to another flight to San Francisco or San Jose without a fee.

A bummer. Former East Bay resident here. For folks going to San Francisco, Napa, or the California national parks on vacation, Oakland is just as, if not more, convenient a place to fly than SFO. Quick security lines, lower crowds, and fewer weather-related operational challenges give it a leg up, in my opinion. I think other airlines’ failures to crack in are a function of (1) Southwest’s greatly entrenched presence and (2) a failure to properly market OAK as a viable alternative to SFO. Oh well, I will happily continue flying Southwest into OAK for my Bay Area visits and skip all of the hassles of SFO (to be clear, SJC is great for many of these same reasons, but is not convenient for people heading to the City or Napa/points north).
