American Airlines Offers Companion Upgrades Starting Today
Earlier this year, American Airlines overhauled its loyalty program. Complimentary upgrades were one of the additions.
AAdvantage Gold and AAdvantage Platinum members now get upgrades from Main / Premium Economy to the next class of service. Since March 2, 2022, American offers complimentary upgrades to all purchased, published fares on American within North America. And that means that those 500-mile upgrades you might have in your accounts are now useless.
American Airlines has sent out emails today with a new update. Starting July 14, American Airlines is expanding upgrade benefits to include a complimentary upgrade for one companion. You’ll no longer need 500-mile upgrades. Upgrades for AAdvantage status members plus one companion traveling with them are complimentary on flights within North America.
American Airlines will now convert all remaining 500-mile upgrades in your account into 250 Loyalty Points each by the end of July. That’s not as good as some of the other offers that people have been getting when calling in.
American says that those Loyalty Points will get you closer to qualifying for status, which is true. But you need 30,000 Loyalty Points to reach AAdvantage Gold.
Conclusion
The addition of complimentary upgrades for Elites and companions it overall an improvement. However, if you have have multiple 500-mile upgrades in your account, you might think otherwise. 250 Loyalty Points is a lousy offer.
