American Airlines Makes It Easier to Requalify for Elite Status

American Airlines is making it easier for Elite members to retain their existing status through 2023. Those who have not yet re-qualified for their current elite status or higher will have two opportunities to do so. They can spend on an eligible AAdvantage credit card or fly on eligible tickets.

New Opportunities to Requalify

These are the two options that you have:

  • Spend $15,000 on an AAdvantage® credit card
    • You’ll retain your AAdvantage Gold, Platinum, Platinum Pro or Executive Platinum status through January 31, 2023, if you spend at least $15,000 on eligible purchases with an eligible AAdvantage® credit card between July 15 – November 15, 2021.
    • Eligible purchases, defined as purchases, including those made by authorized users on your account, less credits, returns and adjustments, made with your Citi® / AAdvantage®, AAdvantage® Aviator® credit card, and AAdvantage® cards issued outside the U.S. that post as base miles to your AAdvantage® account between July 15, 2021 and December 15, 2021 will count toward your qualifying spend.
    • You can combine purchases from multiple cards.
  • Fly American or Partner Airlines
    • You’ll retain your AAdvantage Gold, Platinum, Platinum Pro or Executive Platinum status through January 31, 2023, if you earn at least $2,000 Elite Qualifying Dollars (EQDs) on eligible airline tickets flown between September 1 – December 31, 2021.

This promotion does not affect the elite status of members with lifetime elite status, or the elite status of members who have already met the qualification requirements for 2022 elite status (the same or higher elite status level as such members held on January 1, 2021) as of August 24, 2021. You can see more details here.

Conclusion

These two options make it easier to requalify, but there are some things you should be aware of. You will not be eligible for 2022 elite choice rewards, unless you meet the 2021 elite qualification requirements for Executive Platinum or Platinum Pro. Also, elite status earned due to a promotion is not eligible for this status retention offer.
