American Airlines Web Special To Nassau, Bahamas For 20K Roundtrip

With the news of the $200M Baha Mar waterpark opening that we covered today I got to dreaming about the Bahamas.  So I started doing some searches on Google Flights out of Detroit and the prices were $500+ a person, no bueno.  I opened up some airlines frequent flyer programs and spot checked some of them and it wasn’t looking a ton better there, until I landed on American Airlines that is.  That is when I discovered that they seem to have a 20K web special from many airports to Nassau.

My preliminary search of airports showed the pricing coming up in parts of December, almost all of January and most of February. Be sure to do a calendar search and select 1 stop since you know AA loves those 30 hour 2 stop award flights.

Even with one stop there were some hellacious layovers and 19 hour flights pricing on the web special.  Just be sure to sort by duration and then scroll till you find 20K.  Sometimes the best flight will be 22K or 25K etc. which is still a good deal most of the time in my opinion.

Be sure to check cash prices as well.  They were in the mid $300’s out of NYC which isn’t great value because of the $100+ taxes and fees on the award.  But out of Detroit it was $532 which offered a pretty good value even if the award was for 24.5K.

Web Specials Are Not As Bad As They Used To Be

You may be thinking, but yeah this is a web special so it is pretty restrictive for cancellations.  Not anymore!  While you can not adjust the flight you can cancel and get your miles redeposited. What is the difference between moving a booking vs canceling and rebooking…beats me!

Final Thoughts

American Airlines miles are not worth what they once were, and this isn’t a great deal by any means, but it can offer solid value depending on your airport.  Getting 1.7 cents per AA mile in economy is alright in my book at least.

Be sure to check the cash prices and make the calculations for yourself.  You may be able to find some good deals via cash on American Airlines now too since they are more dynamically priced than they used to be.

Let me know if you find some more airports with good availability in the comments.

  1. So if you stay at the Hyatt Bahn Mar, do you get access to the water park? I read your article but I did not see an opening date.

    • They used to be so easy to earn and now they are difficult. Crazy how things can change in a few years.

      • If only Citi would find a way to ink a deal with AA and make them a transfer partner. Citi and AA both desperately need each other.

Citi needs AA to at least stay somewhat relevant and AA needs Citi to buy more of their miles because we all know that of the U.S. carriers, AA is hurting the most financially at the moment.
