Big Negative Change to Amex Offers? Something Is Happening & It Isn’t Good

Amex Offers Multiple Cards Same Account

Amex Offers Multiple Cards Same Account

One of the most generous aspects of the Amex Offers program is that it often allows you to add offers to both the primary and authorized user cards on an account. Since each authorized user card has its own number, you can theoretically (and in practice) get credits across all cards linked to an offer.

Now, it seems like that may be changing. According to Doctor of Credit, some people are finding that when they link an offer to an authorized user card with the same name as the primary, that the offer disappears from one of the cards. Here is what people are reporting:

  • If an authorized user and main cardholder card share the same name, adding an offer to the second card will remove it from the first. It’s possible this could be happening to all authorized user cards despite the name as I have seen a couple of data points either way.
  • This is happening even if both the authorized user card and primary card are linked to different logins.

So far there has been a report on Twitter and a few reports on the Dan’s Deals forums.

What Is Causing This?

I can only speculate here, but there are some very popular and somewhat lucrative offers around for business cards that I suspect are being abused in some way. For a long time it has been possible to get an authorized user card in the same name as the primary for division of spending etc., but perhaps this is being taken to another level. Only time will tell.

I’m going to test this out with my cards/offers to see if I can replicate it. In the mean time, are you seeing this happen? Do you think it’s just a glitch (these do happen quite often with Amex) or is the bank finally cracking down on this practice?

  1. It happened on personal cards as well – I thought I was losing my mind! I remember selecting the Hilton gift card offer on all of my cards followed by my husband’s cards, but when I logged into my account a couple of weeks later to validate the offer details and expiration, the offer was no longer loaded on my cards. I thought the offer had expired until I logged into my husband’s account a few days later and saw them loaded there.

Note – I am primary on some account and he is primary on others but we have an online account for the cards in our names.

The behavior is not consistent though because I still have a few offers loaded on both accounts/cards.

  2. The reality is we all knew this was going to happen, and it should have happened a long time ago. It makes no sense for Amex and whatever business the offer is for to let one person get the offer 50 times and then not have any left for someone else to even get it once.

    • It’s not just across AUs, but across products. Amex Offers are, at least as far as I’m concerned, part of the card’s benefits and therefore part of the fee and motivation to use the card. That is, it motivated me to keep cards past the application promo. If the offers go, my Amex portfolio will shrink. Since they accepted my applications in the first place, I assume they wanted me to have the card.

    • So right.
I don’t understand how People believe by abusing the system that the system doesn’t change.
Why can we not be happy that it is even offered one time per account period.
Auth user cards rewards all go to Primary… why would we think Auth user cards should double those offers in regards to spend and get
The People who request Auth user cards only for the goal to use those offers should no longer have ability to add users
(unless they are paying an Auth User fee)
You can only take advantage for so long.
I remember back when the only thing you got for using your Credit Card was…
      THE BILL!!!

  3. DP to counter these findings:

6 business cards (3 primary + 3 AU) all have 10% Lowes, 10% Staples, 10% Dell, 10% Exxon still intact.

    • Did you use the offers on all these cards recently or add them to the cards recently? Offers previously added don’t seem to be affected (yet…)

    • Yes, but I haven’t tried multiple simultaneous logins as a way to save the same offer on different accounts, so there is still some hope

  4. I can confirm offers disappear from AU accounts with the same name (an offer added to John Smith’s EDP is no longer available on John Smith’s SPG) even if the two are on separate log ins

  5. It’s actually worse. I can confirm that offers on cards where the authorized users has the same name as the primary do in fact disappear. But all the same offers on my on business cards also disappeared. (All had different logins)

  6. Come on, Shawn, please test this before turning into Chicken Little. Neither of the comments so far seems relevant to the concern of your post. If it’s legitimate, you’re helping; get the details. If not, it’s merely clickbait — not your typical style.

    • I had heard and seen evidence from several private people in addition to the data points I linked to. Not clickbait, but sorry I didn’t have the time to test it out. This is indeed happening to a lot of people and I personally confirmed that before posting.

  7. I used a stitch fix offer today knowing I had the offer on other cards to use in the future. I logged in to double check today, and all my offers were gone from the other cards.

    • If saved offers are affected this will be devastating…ok maybe a bit dramatic but I have so many Sam’s club and amazon offers to use
