Amex Offers $20 off $20 at

The deals keep rolling in this morning. First we have the upcoming Office Depot/Officemax Visa gift card deal and now a brand new Amex Offer giving a $20 statement credit with a $20 or more purchase at Wow!

The best thing about this offer is that it is widely available. I was able to find it under the “Amex Offers For You” tab on all 11 of my family’s accounts on the American Express website. The offer can also be loaded via Twitter by tweeting #AmexSamsClub.

Analysis & What to Buy

amex offers sams club

As you can see, the terms don’t appear to exclude gift cards. This is really good since Sam’s Club sells a wide variety of them online. In addition to Sam’s Club gift cards, you can buy discounted cards from merchants like: iTunes, Southwest Airlines, Google Play, Outback Steakhouse and many many more.

You can also purchase Visa and Mastercard gift cards on their website as well, although they are all Vanilla branded and are tougher to liquidate at Walmart. Either way, there are plenty of options!

This is an amazing deal and one you will want to register for AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. I can’t imagine that it will last more than a few hours before hitting the registration maximum. This is a great reason why you should have all of your accounts ready to sync with these offers. Nothing is better than free money!

    • Which gc did you get?

There’s $50 MasterCard gc with approx 5% fee (don’t remember the brand).

I’m going to get the fandango discounted gc and sell online to liquidate. Will be less than a 5 % loss and I won’t have to leave the house to liquidate.

  1. I just bought coffee and it coded as online photo. Will wait before placing another order and see what happens. No confirmation email so far.

  2. Another option is to buy Sam’s club gift cards and sell them at 90.75% face value to Comes out to $18.15 net profit per amex card.

Considering there’s no devaluation for selling as ecodes (other gc sites offer less for ecodes) you should be able to clear out all of your cards online. Note, I’m not positive if Sam’s Club gcs are accepted as a physical copy only, such as Exxon.

You can also use the gc in store or at Wal-Mart too. Lot of options here. I’m definitely waiting to see if the coding of transactions issue gets resolved.

    • No one is trying to get on you because we all do things we learn from, but contacting support and telling them you tried to buy a gift card isn’t a good thing for you or the community. Imagine if everyone called in about gift cards how quickly it’d be shut down.

  3. How is everyone seeing Sam’s Club Gift Cards with no fee for non-members? I just went to put one in my card as a test and a $20 gift card showed a $2 non-member fee (and yes – it was a Sams Club Gift Card and not a merchant card.

    • Over at SlickDeals, I see some people reporting that people who sign up for non-member accounts with a CA address (even though your shipping and billing address do not need to be in CA) are not getting hit with the extra 10%. So maybe that’s the reason some people are getting hit with the 10% and others are not, if you are getting hit with the 10% on Sam’s Club gift cards (unless maybe the 10% on SC GC’s has just recently been added). Whatever the case, I think most of us are waiting (before placing any more orders) to confirm that the “photo” coding issue is taken care of and we get confirmation of the $20 Amex Offer credits.

  4. There are two Anne Geddes Vanilla Mastercards ($50 and $100) that have $1.50 taken off of the usual processing fee – so they’re $52.38 and $103.88 respectively.

  5. PDX: They charged you 10% for gift cards? Why wouldn’t you just buy a Sam’s Club gift card and then buy those gift cards at Wal-Mart without taking the 10% hit?!

    • Fair question.

      a) I didn’t know that Sam’s Club cards were not getting hit with the 10% until after I ordered

      b) I don’t get to Walmart much these days (post-BlueBird), so not sure if the savings would be worth my time (and what are peoples’ experience with using Sams/WM gift cards to buy other merchant gift cards in-store?)

  6. So far I’ve placed 2 orders, but am probably going to wait for additional data before placing more.

One order was for a movie gift card (plus filler item to get just over $20). One was for a $25 Starbucks gift card. I’m not a member, so paid the 10%.

Both orders are pending on my Amex account as “ Online Photo”, and I have not received Amex Offer confirmation emails on either.

I’d be interested in confirmation from anyone regarding non-gift cards (like Shawn’s toilet paper example).

Until then, holding off on more …

  7. The $20 back for a Sams Club $20 purchase isn’t working. No confirmation email, and the purchase regardless of category is being coded as online photo which is excluded. If I were you I would activate the offer but WAIT until this glitch is fixed.

  8. My purchase was also coded as Sams Club.Com Online Photo. As with Smart and Final, I start small (exactly charged $20 in this case) and will wait to hear reports of statement credits being posted before making more purchases with my other AMEX cards. I was burned by a similar offer through DISCOVER DEALS, promised 5% back through their portal to Walgreens. Com, the bonus cashback never posted.

  9. Shawn:

True on the emails not going out, as I rarely get them for the small business deal each year, but the credits ALWAYS post. Are you saying that even non-gift card purchases are showing up as Photo Online?

    • Someone said a toilet paper purchase coded the same way. I purchased one Sam’s Club gift card and will wait to see what happens. It could be that all purchases are coding that way and that Amex will have to fix this if it is a problem. It could also be that the credits will post as normal. I’m going to hold off on buying more for now.

      • Shawn, please keep us posted about it. It seems all the purchases were coded as online photo by now. Hopefully, it can be fixed soon. Thank you.

  10. There is no additional 10% added for gift cards, even if you are not a member (at least for Sam’s Club gift cards.)

    • Just an FYI that the 10% is added to merchant gift cards. And, FYI, they have a lot of eGift Card (email) options, but they will not sell those to non-members. Has me thinking about finding a cheap item (filler) and adding a $45 membership (and hopefully the $20 off would apply, making the membership $25 + the filler item).

  11. Dedrick:

Same thing with me, plus I have a third party bank AMEX, so even though I’m not concerned about calling AMEX and getting credited manually if this doesn’t post, I think I will be shit out of luck for the third party bank (I doubt I can call AMEX and have them credit a third party AMEX manually.)

  12. I purchased a gift card from however the AMEX biller appears as “ Online Photo” which concerns me as this offer excludes online photo purchases. Also, I usually get an email from AMEX within minutes of a purchase congratulating me for using an AMEX sync offer. I did not receive one with this purchase.

    • Several people have reported it coding that way. We will have to wait and see because all purchases seem to be showing as photo. During the S&F deal the emails weren’t going out for several hours, so that doesn’t mean anything. Let us know if you receive the email and I will post updates as I find out more info.
