Amex Bumps Up Referral Limit to 100K Points for Select Cardholders

American Express is targeting some cardholders with an offer to earn up to 100,000 Membership Rewards points this year through referrals.

As you might know, American Express cards let you refer others to sign up and you earn a referral bonus. These referral bonuses vary from 10,000 to 45,000 points. But the maximum for Membership Rewards earning cards has always been 55,000.

American Express has emailed some cardholders to let them know about this new cap of 100,000 points for specific cards. I didn’t receive an email, but my I see the referral earning cap increased to 100,000 on my Amex Gold card. All my other cards are still at 55,000 annual limit.

This is the text in the email:

Your referral bonus annual limit has been increased from 55,000 Membership Rewards® points to 100,000 Membership Rewards® points per calendar year. This means you can refer more friends each year and continue to earn points for eligible referrals, up to 100,000 points per calendar year. Terms apply.

You can also check the referral page for your credit card here, to see if your referral limit has been increased.

Conclusion

American Express is increasing the referral bonus annual limit from 55,000 to 100,000 for select cardholders, and for specific cards only. For now I only see this limit increased in one of my cards, and American Express Gold.

The higher limit useful for those who max out their referrals annually. If you have too many cards, or don’t get enough referrals, then this doesn’t really affect you.

Let us know if the referral limit has been increased on any of your American Express credit cards.
