Brazil Will Require Proof of Vaccination for Foreign Visitors
The supreme court of Brazil has ruled that inbound international travelers will be required to provide proof of full COVID-19 vaccination in order to enter the country. The decision contradicts the wishes of the country’s president who remains unvaccinated.
Inbound international travelers will still be required to submit a negative PCR test result and complete a health declaration form before being allowed to board their Brazil-bound flights. A date has not been set yet for the introduction of these new requirements.
The ruling invalidates the national health agency regulations demanding only a negative PCR test for foreign arrivals. Lenient measures had made Brazil a popular destination among non-vaccinated tourists, BBC reports. The county is also preparing for its popular New Year’s celebrations and world-famous Carnival in Rio de Janeiro, which will run from February 25 – March 5, 2022.
Judge Luís Roberto Barroso said in his ruling that exceptions would be made for those coming from countries unable to vaccinate most of their populations. They will need to quarantine on arrival for five days, and then take another test.
About 65% of the population, and 85% of Brazilian adults, are now fully vaccinated. This past week’s average deaths per day had fallen to about 200 from a peak of 3,000 back in April.
Since the start of the pandemic, Brazil has reported 22 million Covid-19 infections and 616,000 deaths.
